Such a smart picture book, I was confused why there was a dog chasing the rabbit throughout the book until the end, then realised you can read it both ways!
Very cool story.

A wonderful little postmodern picturebook by Carvalho. A very clever invitation to close looking and one that would attract early and developed readers. It is a book that holds two stories. One to be read from the front and the other from the back.

From a Western perspective, the primary story tells of a firefly looking for its partner and being supported by animals on its way. The latter story, starting from the back follows a rabbit that is chased by a seemingly ferocious dog. Both the firefly and rabbit's stories run in tandem upon the same spreads but are separate in their telling.

Plenty to look at here and an early introduction into the clever interplays of picturebooks. I can see where The Hug got its idea from...

In this review, I’m revisiting a family favorite. Follow the Firefly/Run Rabbit Run! is a wordless picture book aimed at readers ages 2 and up that can be read in both directions. First, the reader follows a firefly’s search for a flashing light, reading from left to right towards the back cover. Then, a rabbit runs through the forest from right to left, ending up, unusually, at the front of the book . . . where a firefly is about to set off on a quest to find a flashing light. Yes, you could keep going all day!...

The firefly is searching for something. He asks for help from all the forest inhabitants and following their directions he finds himself in the big city. Will he find what he is looking for?

Meanwhile, in the big city rabbit has managed to escape his cage but soon finds himself being chased by a dog into the deep, dark forest. Will he manage to get away?

This brilliant, wordless picture book contains two stories. One that runs from start to finish and the other that runs from finish to start. The illustrations are full of exciting details, and young readers will delight in searching for the protagonists on each rambunctious, colourful page.

With its captivating illustrations and interactive design, it offers a truly engaging reading experience for young children.

The book is divided into two halves, with "Follow the Firefly" on one side and "Run Rabbit Run" on the other. Each half tells a separate story, but they are connected through the illustrations and the interactive design, which encourages readers to physically interact with the book by turning it around and upside down to follow the stories.

The illustrations by Bernardo Carvalho are beautifully done, with bold and vibrant colors that capture the attention of young readers. The use of different textures, patterns, and shapes adds depth and visual interest to the book. The illustrations are also cleverly designed to create an interactive experience, as readers follow the firefly or the rabbit through the pages, turning the book around to read the story from different perspectives.

The stories themselves are simple and engaging, with a sense of adventure and discovery. "Follow the Firefly" takes readers on a journey through the forest as they follow the firefly's path, encountering different animals and environments along the way. "Run Rabbit Run" tells the story of a rabbit trying to escape from a hungry fox, with readers joining in the chase by turning the book upside down.

One of the standout features of this book is its interactive design, which encourages young readers to actively participate in the story. The physical act of turning the book around and upside down adds a level of interactivity and playfulness, making it a unique and memorable reading experience. It also encourages children to use their imagination and creativity as they follow the firefly or the rabbit on their adventures.

The only reason I didn't rate it a full 5 stars is because the stories themselves are relatively simple and may not have as much depth or complexity as some other children's books. However, the interactive design and captivating illustrations make up for it and make this book a standout choice for young readers.

In conclusion, "Follow the Firefly / Run Rabbit Run" is a visually stunning and interactive children's book that offers a unique reading experience. With its engaging illustrations, interactive design, and imaginative stories, it is sure to captivate the minds of young readers. I would highly recommend it and rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
