utterly fantastic and grim. Disregard the "imbecilic" one star review from another reader.
like a gothic Dancer in the Dark with elements of Joan Samson's The Auctioneer (which I confess, I did not like). Similar in themes to Angela Carter's The Magic Toyshop, though I MUCH preferred this.

Little Angie, you deserve to get murdered by Peregrine you imbecilic moron.
Sorry, was that a spoiler? Consider yourself spared.
So. I kind of knew what I was going to get into when buying this book at a thrift store. The gauche 70's cover of a bra-less woman in a see-through top looking concerned in the woods, combined with the summary, certainly had me thinking raunchy gothic. The review of "psychosexual thriller" had me suspicious that this was going to be a prime example of horrible 1970's dime store 'edgy' nonsense. I sure love being right. I feel like the 70's was just a giant foray into startled sexuality. Only now it just seems tame. But boy did they try to embrace the shock factor. I was actually looking forward to reading a dark, shocking book, especially since there was a positive review from the author of Rosemary's Baby written on the back.
Just. Utter. Garbage. Naive little princess who lets herself be taken advantage of in every situation in her life. Angie aside, the plot structure is disjointed and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm still wrapping my head around her husband killing his mistress and having an affair with his cousin situation. Yeesh.
