Many people eat a gluten-free diet, but they may not be aware that the real culprit that's responsible for their ill health is in fact a protein known as 'Lectin'. This little-known intolerance can cause a wide range of nasty symptoms, from Leaky Gut to Autoimmune Disorders. The good news is that you can help to eliminate those symptoms if you make a few changes to the way that you eat.
If you are one of the thousands of individuals on a gluten free diet but still experiencing the same symptoms that led you to try the diet, you may need to also reduce lectins from your diet. If you did not test positive for a gluten sensitivity, but find you feel a bit better on a gluten free diet, lectin intolerance may also be something you want to consider. Lectins may be responsible for your symptoms and in some cases, may be able to reverse your diagnosis once you decrease them from your diet.
This book will look at exactly what lectins are, the relationship with gluten, and exactly how to reduce them from your diet. With a little bit of guidance and determination, you too may start to feel better by changing the way you eat.
Quick summary of the Lectin challenge and opportunity
I appreciated the layman's approach to a scientific topic and the focus on the core issues rather than endless rabbit trails depending a position. There was also actionable information and appropriate guidance. Thanks Evelyn.
This is a good tool to learn about Lectins. I am already eliminating Lectins from my diet. I have lost 35 pounds since eliminating as many Lectins as I can!!
I am old, which probably explains my bias that faulty grammar in a book causes me to doubt the credibility of the content. This bias is amplified when I also find faulty content (page 26):
"It is important to note that with Nightshades, there are not any low lectin alternatives specific to the nightshade family, however, you can prepare certain nightshades, namely beans/ legumes in a way that will reduce the natural lectin content."
Aside from the fact that beans ARE legumes, nightshades are very much NOT. The author is obviously not a gardener, farmer, nor plant person. Nor does she need to be. But one would expect of an author with so many books to her credit -- or the publisher! -- that the book would be reviewed by an editor and someone knowledgeable about the topic before publishing it. Failing to do this doesn't much inspire one to read the author's other books. Just one reporter's opinion ...
Lectin is a low-level toxin found in plants. Similar to gluten, it's causing problems in our bodies. This book identifies the foods high in lectin and tells you how to decrease the amount you receive in your diet.
After attempting a plant based diet for some time, I have found that some of my stomach problems got worse. Didn't understand how this could be when "green is good", right? Not necessarily. While this book shed some light on illnesses caused by a plant based diet, it also discouraged me from wanting to eat anything edible without having some type of counteraction.
Did you know that: * Plants and (also animals) do not want to be eaten? * They defend themselves by enveloping their tissues in a class of protein called "lectin"? * Gluten is only one type of lectin, but there are many others? * Consuming lectins in high doses is harmful to humans? * Lectin concentrations vary significantly between nutrition sources? * Cooking high-lectin foods can render them edible again? * Many high-lectin food sources are also highly nutritious?
Find out here: * What those high-lectin foods are, * How to pre-process them to make them suitable for consumption, * What types of illnesses can be caused by high lectin consumption.
This information about lectins was exactly what I was looking for! What they are, how they affect us, how soaking, boiling, and especially pressure cooking can remove, or break down lectins is a huge game changer for me. Finding out that grain fed meat and eggs can be high in lectins was amazing and could be a game changer for me. Also I love beans, and discovering that soaking and pressure canning them will really bring some favorites back to my menu. And sprouts, too! So much more in this short info packed book, check it out!!
I like how direct and to the point this book is. I have started researching more in depth about autoimmune disorders and this book was a helpful guide. It takes all the science based evidence and puts it into quick facts that we all want without the over the head scientific terminology. This is great for anyone who wants the bullet points.
