Mallory Sajean #1

Incident sur Kenval

Rate this book

Philippe Mercurio is a science fiction writer and author of the MALLORY SAJEAN series.
A huge fan of Jack Vance and of manga like "Battle Angel Alita," he has spent years creating his own science fiction universe with only one objective: to take the reader on a faraway journey full of adventure.

"Procyon Shattered" and "Sileise Raided" are his first stories in the MALLORY SAJEAN series. He is currently working on the next book, "Aldebaran Divided."

When Philippe Mercurio is not writing, he likes trying new things to eat or drink with his friends, even if it ends up badly. He also enjoys classic cars, because driving a 30 years old coupé is a bit like flying the Millennium Falcon: you never know if you'll get lightspeed.

What excellent world-building! PROCYON SHATTERED is an exciting and engrossing science fiction novel, first in a series, starring a female protagonist extremely strong in character and dedicated, plus villains ranging from the banal con artist to actual evil. The translation from the original French reads enticingly.

I was prepared for this story to be a bit light and fluffy given the blurb, however I wasn’t expecting to get eyestrain from my repeated eye rolls. Mallory reminded me of a bubble headed, overtly sexualized train wreck.

I lost interest almost as soon as I started reading. If they had said parody then I would have been prepared for it, you do have to be in the mood for it and suspend your desire for something with some meat. Mallory didn’t meet a guy that didn’t want to get with her didn’t matter the species…she must have magic pheromones.

Maybe the author left things a bit ambivalent with her having an almost wide eyed anime feel to her complete with big batting eyelashes, massive mammary glands, as she some how downs a bad guy but needs the big strong man to comfort her in the end so we could see it’s more tongue in cheek?!?!

Most of the story is just a shiny surface and you never get past the shiny exterior to find anything with substance to it and it went on way to long for something without any meat to it.

Our heroine has inherited a space ship from her uncle, but it also comes with a boat load of trouble. Life is about to get real interesting.

This is a space opera story with a lot of steam. The narrative might seem a bit off now and then, but this is not unusual for a story translated from another language (French in this case). The plot is also a little light, but there is lots of action and the story moves at a pretty good pace. It has a very campy feel to it, reminding me of early pulp stories or perhaps Barbarella (another French product). And taken at that level, I found the story to be highly enjoyable. Overall, a light, steamy read with lots of action. I look forward to seeing the next book in the series.

Highly recommended.

Preface: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I did not enjoy this book. As the headline indicates, the problems were twofold - the protagonist, and the plot, aka the two most important elements in every novel.

First off, the protagonist checks off everyone one of my "'Strong' Woman Written By A Man" red flags. Overly described in a sexy manner (to the point of having a scene where she admires her naked body in a mirror and comments on how pink her nipples are). Ogled by every male character she comes across (even those not of her species). Good at hand-to-hand combat, but still has to be rescued by a big strong man when the going gets tough (oh, and her clothes get conveniently ripped up in half her encounters). Entire life revolves around men (proving her father's innocence using her uncle's ship (no mention of her mother, ever); all the villains are misogynistic (generally rapey) men, to the point where even the evil aliens oppress their females, all of the friendly aliens/people are also male, to the point where I'm not sure she even has a conversation with another female character). Aggressively loud and angry for no real reason, but melts around cute stuff, etc. And she conveniently gets together (sort of) with the male main character at the end, even though he's much older than her (to the point where he compares her to Lolita - what the hell).

I don't think the author did any of this on purpose, but it just highlights what a problem some men have with writing women as human beings instead of sex objects. It's gross.

The plot also has problems. For one, it goes on way longer than it needs to. The first 150-200 pages of this are just set-up to the actual plot, with action sprinkled in between. That action is pretty boring and lackluster, since none of it matters and none of the adversaries carry over - the group just fights unremarkable villain after unremarkable villain. The actual plot could be interesting - orchestrating a biological genocide against an alien race to seize their planets - but it just gets drowned in unending running from point A to points B, C, D, E....Some of those locations are even genuinely interesting, but we never linger on any long enough for us to remember them. We're always moving on to the next big, impressive, utterly pointless set piece.

That's really all there is to say about this 500 page novel. If you want mindless action and a sex pot main character, I guess this is the book for you. Otherwise, stay away.
