Five authors and seventy color photographs tell the history of Salem, Massachusetts, focusing on the "cornerstones" of this great colonial portthe topics that continue to fascinate historians, visitors, and residents. The five articles are "The Maritime History of Salem," "The Witchcraft Trials of 1692," "Architecture of Historic Salem," "Nathaniel Salem Personified," and "Salem Then and Now."
I bought this book years ago while in Salem. I had planned a scavenger hunt for my husbands birthday in Salem and while we were there I bought this book. Unfortunately it ended up in the bookcase and I sort of forgot about it. Now we will be going back to Salem for a get away weekend and it reminded me of this book. I read it and really enjoyed it. It is a combination coffee table book and historical book. It gave a nice historical overview of Salem as a maritime hub, the witch trials, the architecture and of Nathanial Hawthorne and mixed in really nice photographs. If you are looking for only a pictorial view of the town or for an indepth historical look then this book wouldn't be what you want. However if you are looking for a happy medium this would be it.
