The scene: It is early 2000s. Little Michelle decides that today is the day that she will read her first chapter book, cover to cover. Just shy of 100 pages, it was the biggest book on her shelf (minus the dictionary).
She has read this book at least a dozen times already, but never completed in a single day. She will succeed.
She starts at the kitchen table. A memory she vividly remembers. Where she finishes, is unknown, as the feeling of accomplishment overshadowed any recollection of her whereabouts at the time.
She will go on to reread this book again and again and again. ‐-------------‐-----------------------------------‐--------------------
This book holds such a special place in my heart. I developed a love of reading at a young age. I was a very shy girl who used books to escape the chaos that surrounded me. Through books I was able to see the world, go on adventures, be silly and be safe. I was not the greatest at reading aloud, but silently it was akin to watching a movie in my head.
My First Kitten was my first "novel" of sorts. A simple story about getting a kitten and taking care of a kitten. For me, it was the start of something amazing.
I honestly don’t remember a ton about this other than I ordered it from the book fair magazine and it came with a bracelet (?) or something. I remember liking it though. I feel like mine had glitter on the cover too.
This book is extremely important to me. It is the first chapter book that I ever read alone, unassisted, of my own volition.
I was six. I remember very vividly reading My First Kitten in a single morning, loving every second of it. I came out of my room proudly for lunch and told my dad that I'd read a chapter book all the way through. He didn't believe me. Or maybe, he did and was just teasing me.
"Without looking at the back, then, tell me what it's about!" he said, with that blue twinkle in his eyes.
And then we ate beefaroni, ravioli, or Lipton's chicken noodle soup - lunch staples in that little house I loved so well. I feel old now, comparatively. And I'm a vegetarian. So is that little 3 year-old girl that would have been sitting beside me. Weird how time works.
Anyways, that got a bit off track. This book is fantastic. It was my FIRST. It helped me build confidence as a reader. It led me to read fantastic books like Into the Land of the Unicorns and The Hobbit in the year or two after.
My love of reading started when i was young, and it gives me immense pleasure to provide books to Spread the Word Nevada, an organization that passes them on to children in the community. They are a terrific organization supporting an important cause. If your local I encourage you to check them out. For those living further a field, look in your own community, their may already be a similar program in place. And if not, you can always help start one.
Myself, I go out on the weekends and shop thrift store and bulk book lots to rescue books and donate them. Sometimes I'll find a book I remember reading when I was young and will read it again before passing it on.
I don't rate these books using my normal scale, instead I give most of them three stars. This isn't a Criticism of the book, simply my way of rating them as good for children.
