Edward Schillebeeckx, O.P., (b. 1914) has proved to be one of the most widely read, influential, and controversial theologians of the twentieth century. This book, which comes with a commendation from Schillebeeckx himself, provides the first detailed and comprehensive account of his thought to appear in English. It is based on lengthy study of the complete range of Schillebeeckx’s writings in the language in which they were written. It also draws on significant archival material concerning his lecture notes, hitherto unused in English studies of his thought. Schillebeeckx has become especially well known for his writings on Jesus and on ministry. This book traces his thoughts on these matters. But it also highlights his way of explaining how, and in what sense, human beings know God the Creator. In doing so, it draws attention to the most interesting and original feature of Schillebeeckx’s his account of the meaning of faith in God in cultural contexts where faith is regarded as meaningless.
