Leo Wolvenaer: de Vlaamse Werther?
Hendrik Conscience, die we voornamelijk kennen als auteur van nationalistische epossen, toont in dit boek waarom hij - terecht - tot de romantiek moet gerekend worden.
Hij schotelt ons een verhaal voor dat zich laat vergelijken met 'Het lijden van de jonge Werther':
Door het verschil in standen is Leo, een jonge beeldhouwer, hopeloos gescheiden van zijn geliefde, de dochter van zijn mecenas.
De verhaallijn is evenwichtig en alles wat je zou willen van een 19de-eeuwse romanticus. Het katholieke vertrouwen in een leven na de dood schaaft weliswaar de ruwe randjes van het fatalisme. De taal is literair maar niet hoogdravend, oud maar niet verouderd.
Dit is het eerste boek van Conscience dat ik met een goed geweten kan aanbevelen.
