Von Gerkan, Marg, und Partner is a leading and important German architectural firm and there's several monographs of their work published. This one covers a seminal period in their practice through the short span from 97-99. The architecture covered here is breath-taking and worthy of a good monograph, but I wasn't that impressed with the book itself. For one, for a book with a list price of $100 US, it wasn't of the production values I'd expected. Granted, I only paid $42 for it and it had been sitting in a warehouse I would guess for a full decade, but still: the paper quality and inks used didn't seem up to par with the likes of Phaidon and other leading architectural publishers. Some of the actual photography is stellar while other images are not impressive. The text, in both German and English is crowded and small, thus seeming in places like an afterthought.

Overall, a necessary work on an important firm, but poor graphic design—don't expect people who spend $100 on a design book not to notice poor book design, either.
