A distinguished astronomer presents technical, biological, and social plans for survival and prosperity on terrestrial and artificial planets in this and other solar systems
The subtitle of the book is "A Field Manual" which describes its contents very well. It takes a step by step approach to all of the problems that would be faced by the colonization of other worlds, including some of the thorny issues such as the vast distances involved and the fact the you could never nip back for something that you had forgotten, or that had broken on the way. Excellent for LATU as it deals in great depth with many of the issues that are dealt with in the course. However, having said that it does deal with all of the issues in a rather shallow fashion, and appears to be written for a very general audience. I was also disappointed in the coverage given to space stations as these will obviously be the first step. As with many of these sorts of books, events have very definitely overtaken it. Indeed, I was surprised when writing this review to see the date of publication as the text seems older and may well be a rehash of previous books by this author of which there have been many.
