If I could give it zero stars I would.

This book is atrocious. From its hard lean into bias to its unfounded psychotherapy, its content is deeply problematic. The basic premise to be authentically you is good but then Clive-Smith spends copious amount of time in the book telling you who you *should* be so the book fails its premise.

Additionally, it is written from such a position of privilege and Clive-Smith is just wholly unaware of that fact. The book states my clothes, my haircut, and my car are all who I am and that I should get rid of anything that is not me and replace it with something that is. Yet, much of my life I did not have the financial means to have much of a say in those things so I don’t place a ton of weight on making my judgments of other humans based on them. I’d rather actually get to know them and their true authentic self which has a lot more to do with who they are and how they comport themselves on the day
-to-day than their external branding.

Clive-Smith also states that you need to know exactly where you are going in life and work relentlessly to get there. Except, in my opinion, the world needs people to fall into serendipity of unknown collisions because it is vast and we don’t all know what are strengths are at 20 or even 40 or even the boundless possibilities that exist. If you are driven by goals and want to plan your life, do that, but if being authentically you is to just enjoy the ride that is life, Clive-Smith seems to think that is unacceptable despite her refrain to be authentic.

Please, go read just about anything else.
