It proceeds with an interesting thesis---central to the Old Testament canon is the hidden/elusive presence of God---but it starts hot and continually loses steam. Also, it's wholesale assumption of and constant referencing to the documentary hypothesis becomes mind-numbing about a third of the way through the book. It's really a shame. The basic thesis has really shaped my thoughts about the OT/HB, but the attempt to have it both ways (i.e., an a-historical reading of the OT through historically reconstructed, theoretical sources) fails miserably on multiple levels.
