Jack Robinson and Andy Stone are best friends, navigating their way through life in 90s London with a soundtrack of Britpop. Jack’s in his final year at university and still has no idea about what he wants to do with his life, while Andy’s a mechanic by day, a bit of a man-whore the rest of the time.
Adapting to a new place to live in a big city isn’t easy, especially when girls, alcohol, and hard work get in the way, but having your best friend with you every step of the way makes it that much easier… well, when you’re not ignoring each other.
Filled with laughter and heartache, Jack and Andy’s story is for everyone. A hint of romance, a solid friendship, and plenty of stupid mistakes. But, will they learn from them?
M. B. Feeney is an army brat who finally settled down in Birmingham, UK with her other half, two kids and a dog. She often procrastinates by listening to music of all genres and trying to get ‘just one more paragraph’ written on whichever WIP is open; she is also a serious doodler and chocoholic. Writing has been her one true love ever since she could spell, and publishing is the final culmination of her hard work and ambition.
Her publishing career began with two novellas, and she currently has multiple projects under way, in the hopes that her portfolio of what have been described as “everyday love stories for everyday people” will continue to grow. Always having something on the go can often lead to block which eventually gets dissolved by good music and an even better book.
Her main reason for writing is to not only give her readers enjoyment, but also to create a story and characters that stay with readers long after the book is finished, and possibly make someone stop and think “what if . . . ”
This book takes you back to being a student in the 90s, so grab your batteries, your cassette player and get ready to smoke in the pubs again! Being a student and living with your bestfriend makes you think you have the world, but can that lifestyle be added to with the addition of a woman? Jack and Andy are besties and are living the dream, until they both take different paths with the new woman in their lives. Loved the 90s references, the fun and banter and the storyline was unique. Felt like it needed more at the end but overall a good read. *Read as part of KU*
I was born in the 80s so I was a lot younger in the era this book is set in. Having said that I grew up in Essex so it was still very much a step back in time to my youth reading this book.
By that I mean I was actually reading in an Essex accent in my head!!!
I found the book interesting enough to keep me motivated to keep on reading in one go. I read it in a car journey so I just carried on reading!!
A nice easy read nothing too taxing on the old brain, and a lot of old skool tunes to remember the good old days.
A string of BritPop tunes acts as the binding backdrop to this dialogue-rich tale set in 90's London. Jack and Andy, longtime best mates, are facing the realities of stepping out on their own. Andy has jumped straight into the work force, persuing his dream. Jack, on the other hand, is attending uni by day and bar-tending at night. A serious relationships is the last thing on either of their radars at this juncture in their lives. Of course, when you least expect something is when it happens, right? Girls & Boys is told from multiple points of view, although it's mostly through Jack's eyes that we get to watch their shenanigans unfold. From barely missed deadlines and car troubles to worrying about bills, and from going on major benders to trying to sort the female psyche, Jack and Andy's story will take you on a jaunt down memory lane if you're a product of the 90's, or will show you what you missed if you aren't. Definitely recommend.
This is now my second favorite M.B. Feeney book and I am solidly #TeamJack from beginning to end.
Jack and Andy are best friends. They're into the bar scene, indie music, and looking out for each other. Ruth and Nina are best friends (er, mates) as well. What happens when these two worlds collide?
I'm not sure exactly why this book grabbed me so hard. I never partied. Ever. I only know what a hangover is because I've seen someone else with one. I'm not into indie music very often. But there was something compelling about the entire cast of characters, although Nina got the least screen time and felt the least developed.
Maybe I fell into the book because it felt so real. I'm pretty sure if I went to London and went to a bar, I'd find a Jack working the tap. Andy would roll in later. Nina and Ruth would show up, in a group of friends, and there would be flirting. I'd even understand what they were saying because I've seen it all in this book.
It's not a strict romance novel. It's... coming of age with a romantic twist. The sex is (happily, for me) not prominent, but there is a steamy scene or two. It's just not in your face.
There's some light editing stuff, which I mention only because *I* notice such things, but it's very light and I'm guessing the average reader isn't going to notice. (I wish, sometimes, I was the average reader.) Even with my obsessive need for punctuation perfection, I blasted through this book in less than 48 hours. That's when you know the story has grabbed me.
So, if you have a few good summer days, this is a perfect beach read. Pick it up, have a go, and get an appreciation for the 90's London bar scene.
First of all let's start with how unique that cover is, it fits this new adult story, set in the 90's in London, perfectly. Following the life of Jack and Andy, two best friends and roommates as they navigate the dating waters while Jack attempts to complete his degree, and Andy tries to hold down his job as a mechanic. This book focusses on Jack and his love life, or rather his lack of one, when he sits next to a brown eyed girl on a bus and realises that he doesn't just want a one night stand with her. Feeney has captured the essence of trying to find your way in life, as you balance studying with partying, really well and the playlist took me right back to my twenties which was fun. I've read a number of Feeney's books before and enjoyed them, and while I liked this one, for me it seemed to be lacking that emotional connection to the characters that I felt in her past works, I didn't get the feels for them, or their relationships, so for that reason it's a 3.75 stars for me. **I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review**
Great story, with the British feel that I have always loved from this author but also an added bonus of being set in the 90's (absolutely love the songs used as a backdrop).
In this story, we meet Jack, and his best friend Andy, who are living their lives as single blokes while flatting together in London. With university almost over, Jack's spending his time studying and working at the local pub while Andy's already working as a mechanic. The last thing either of them expects is to meet girls they want more than a fling with.
Witty, wonderful dialogue with characters who are flawed (yes Andy I mean you lol) and likeable at the same time. Told mostly from Jack's POV, we also gain insight into Ruth, the girl Jack meets when he least expects it. Her occasional POV adds an even greater depth to the story. It's got a bit of everything - romance as well as situations that test even the strongest of friendships.
I reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
Go back to the 90’s with M.B. Feeney’s, Girls and Boys. I loved this book from start to finish and pretty much had instant love towards Jack who in the end became my favourite character #TeamJack. This book really does take you back to the past, for a second I was thrown by the fact people were smoking in pubs! Say goodbye to modern technology and remember how it used to be when people actually talked to each other!
This story is a great lighthearted story following the life of Jack Robinson, who is in his final year of uni and his best mate Andy Stone. The last thing Jack expects is to find himself pursuing a serious relationship. The story is told from multiple POVs but concentrates mostly on Jack and it was great to see what the other characters were thinking and not just the main characters.
So how do you go back in time, to a time before social media, ebooks and smart phones ! To a time that had an amazing soundtrack and was the back drop to my teens ! Pick up this book ! It honestly gets you reminiscing about years gone by and for me a trip down memory lane !
Andy and Jack are great and although the story is told in multiple POVs it's mainly regarding this couple and how they are in their life's and when you least expect it bang things happen
Real life in the 90's bills being paid, batteries going wrong it's all here in a great read
A light hearted read that took me back to my sixth form years and first loves. The studying, the lectures and the bombing about on London buses all alongside batteries dying and some wicked studying tunes. I loved it!!!
It was the best trip back to 90s ever. I loved the feeling of being a teenager again. And Ms Feeney made it possible. Thank you.
Ms Feeney created an amazing and refreshing story about two friends. Jack and Andy. Both trying to find their place in life and world. It mainly focuses on Jack's love life and I love it. I love him.
Ms Feeney gave me the feeling of London in 90s. Trip to the past. And 2 characters that are hard not to love.
I loved M.B Feeney's exchange series so was excited to read more of her work. Set in the 90's, Andy and Jack are two likeable Essex boys who move to London together having been friends since they played for the same under 12's football team - Andy to start his first job and Jack to go to uni. The story centres around Jack - his uni life and working to help pay the bills on their shared flat. We see a few chance encounters with a brown eyed girl and get a glimpse from Ruth's diary of a few missed encounters also - I liked the diary entries from Ruth..they added another level to the story. Both play on each other's minds and this egged me on to wanting to get into this book to find out how it would play out. I loved the banter between Andy and Jack and loved seeing Andy's character too, the interlinking story with Andy and his eventful hook-ups also gave it another level. It was an easy and fun read. I grew up in the 80's so some of the music references weren't really what I had been in to but if you're a 90's child this will resonate with you.. but I did love the blast back to my past of cassettes, Ford capris and Jack having to drive to see Ruth to arrange to see her later that night..a time before the popularity of mobile phones !
I was really looking forward to reading this - I was born in the second half of the 80s but still have a good memory of the 90s, so I was excited to be thrown back in time!
With Jack & Andy being best mates for practically half their life, it was inevitable that they were eventually going to move in together. Though they led two different lives - Jack, following his dreams at Uni with a part time job, and Andy, following his of going straight into full time work and becoming a mechanic. Jack, head in his studies; Andy, a bit of a man whore. Until they meet Ruth & Nina - also best friends.
Joining the boys & girls on their ride was great. As usual from M B Feeney we get a mix of serious and humour, and they were perfectly well balanced. Their story was totally believable, and you could actually imagine these guys being your friends, or living their journey. It was a bit rocky at times, but that's what happens when you're torn between love & friends, right?
In some parts I would have liked a bit more as it felt a bit jumpy at points, but all in all it was a great throwback story that will induce memories if you were a 90s teen!
There isn't much not to like in this engaging tale of four young people, who criss and cross their tangled lives until all is resolved in an ending worthy of a Shakespearean comedy. Both protagonists' voices were well delivered, although I did feel Jack sounded rather too consistently mature for an undergraduate. Nevertheless, they are likable characters, and the only thing that could have improved on the ending was if the wicked, cheating bimbo had met a bad end, instead of quietly fading out.
I did feel the sudden jump to a single porn scene near the end was unnecessary and contributed nothing to the book, and the whole thing could have done with some proofreading, but those were my only criticisms of a good story well told.
I really enjoyed this book it was a trip down memory lane,a little blast from the past..Set in the 90's in Britpop London..The story wasn't to heavy making it an easy read.I loved Jack and Andy and their friendship..It was kinda like watching my cousin and her friends getting reading for a night out,the throw back soundtrack and lack of mobile phones just made it better..I'm definitely going to be reading more from this author.
Although I'm probably a tad young to have experienced all the references first hand, I do love the 90s and this was a brilliant throwback to those simpler days when life was easier. No phones, no social media - God I miss it after reading this! I loved the friendship of Jack and Andy, and found their banter really 'real' and engaging. Definitely a fab book, really enjoyed inform start to finish.
This story took me on a journey that was so refreshing and exciting, I couldn't put it down. I've never read a book based in the 90's before and It brought back memories from my teenage years that were long forgotten. The characters were flawlessly written. I loved the banter, the way they all seem to fit. Although the book is Jack's story, I'm team Andy all the way! This is by far one of my favourite books by MB Feeney. This story will stay with me for a very long time.
