Ethan Fisher is college bound- surprising, even to him. Ethan knows he will run into Courtney eventually, and he is determined to have another chance to be the man she thought he was. If it is even possible for her to speak to him without throwing her coffee in his face. He’s willing to take his chances in hopes that the infatuation of their summer love can hold up in the real world.
Courtney Ross feels like she just stepped out of a time machine. She thought going away to college involved some sort of "growing up," so why is she now being thrown into last year? She really doesn't know if she's ready to forgive and forget.
In this sequel- equally delicious as its predecessor- learn how this winding tale of love and heartbreak unfolds.

I tell stories that make me feel like I'm not the only one who thinks the world is a crazy, scary, beautiful place. I hope that my readers feel it too. I also love doughnuts. Too much, in fact. And 90s music and my husband and my son and my feisty little dog :). Do drop me a line here or on social media- I love to talk books.
It’s said there are two sides to every story and nothing brings a young romance into clearer focus than reading first about the one POV and then to have an entire second book with the other POV. Nicole Campbell’s How One attempts to Chase Gravity is “the rest of the story” sequel to What Comes of Eating Doughnuts With a Boy Who Plays Guitar told through Ethan’s voice. Always the player, the bad boy, the one the girls fawned over, he had no idea what truly loving someone felt like until the sassy and feisty Courtney came into his life like a hurricane on a mission. Their relationship was at once volatile, heated and sweetly passionate, although their time together was short. Follow the events from Ethan’s perspective, as he takes their story beyond the phone call from hell.
Will Ethan have another chance with Courtney in college? Will she even speak to him or has she moved on and found someone else, someone less afraid of the unknown? Can they re-kindle their love or has it never really died? Their summer vacation romance is gone, but will there be a new and stronger love to replace their youthful joy? Only time will tell and Ethan is willing to give Courtney all the time she needs, if only he isn’t too late.
Nicole Campbell has taken young, angsty love and given it a more mature, yet still desperate polish as one young man finally understand what needing someone special is all about. She has gotten so deeply into Ethan’s heart and mind that all of the false bravado, which looked so good on the outside is revealed as just a façade to cover his own insecurities and secrets. Ms. Campbell has brought both sides of this tangled love affair to life with a masterfully compassionate hand. People all make mistakes, but to admit them or forgive them are acts of maturity and these two are finding that maturity.
Sometimes a little frustrating, sometimes kind of sweet and quirky, I was captivated by the attention to detail and the depth each character was given as each scene played out, tugging on these old heartstrings like the notes I received this copy from Nicole Campbell in exchange for my honest review.

I read and loved book one: What Comes of Eating Doughnuts With a Boy Who Plays Guitar but my only issue with it, (and I use that word lightly) was the ending. It was open-ended with the long awaited reunion of Courtney and Ethan; this left you as the reader with the ability to fill in the blanks for yourself. Now I’d like to think that I have a vivid imagination but as a huge soppy romantic and a lover of heart-throbs, I have this tendency to look too much into things, ha! So when I spoke to Nicole and she said she was writing a second book I was over the moon, then she told me it would be from Ethan’s POV; I nearly died, it was like she read my mind. Not only do we get Ethan’s POV but we also get to find out exactly what happened that dreadful night in book one.
We only ever got glimpses of Ethan before Courtney, when he or others would speak of his reputation as ‘The Fisher’, so it was a real eye opener to see things from his perspective. Then Courtney’s travels to Ohio for the summer and everything changes. It was great to revisit their relationship and experience the highs and lows through Ethan. However what I was really looking forward to was finding out what Ethan got up to when Courtney went home and it was just as heart breaking. It was definitely wasn’t something that Ethan went into lightly, you witnessed him struggle for a number of weeks but ultimately he was his own worst enemy and as a result lost Courtney.
Then we skip forward to the next year when they both attend the same college, things are tense and awkward but Ethan doesn’t give up, he’s determined to win Courtney back. It was kind of obvious that they would try again for a relationship, so I don’t feel like I’m spoiling anyone with this news. However what I loved about this was that their relationship wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows once they get back together. In order to maintain a real full-time relationship it was going to require some work, this would not be a repeat of the perfect summer romance. They’re not without their problems and neither is perfect which felt very realistic for them to have there occasional fight and make up.
Overall I loved this book, it was an excellent follow up which filled in all the gaps and answered all of my lingering questions. Nicole did an awesome job of a POV flip and also taking the story on from the original. I thoroughly enjoyed returning to Gem City and would recommend this to all my fellow romance lovers and I can't wait to see what Nicole comes up with next!
"He was going to attempt to chase gravity- he needed the feeling back that he had when he was touching her, like the world was theirs and she was strongest force in his universe."
I have been waiting for this day for ever! First of all, happy release day to Nicole! I waited all month to be able to share my review on the day of release and the time has finally come! This is the sequel to What Comes of Eating Doughnuts With a Boy Who Plays Guitar and I loved it even more! Ethan wow'd me from the start of book one and if I was a couple years younger... Anyway, this book is told in Ethan's perspective and I about died. He was hilarious, deep, and intense from cover to cover. He had the BEST quotes out there and I had an incredibly rough time choosing just one. This man stole my heart! Pretty much anybody who has ever loved someone can relate to these characters. It guides you through the high of falling in love for the first time, he comfortable feeling of knowing they love you as much as you do, and the heartbreak of life getting in the way, forcing you apart. Then it focuses on trying to pick up the shattered remains left from the break-up and trying to find who you are meant to be, how to grow from the pain. GAH!! This book!! This book overlaps with the first one: Part 1 begins where the first one started but in Ethan's perspective but Nicole incorporates details that were missed in the first book which helps you feel like you're not re-reading their story all over again. Part 2 picks up where book one ended, still in Ethan's perspective. Part 3 continues as a sequel to the first one but with both Ethan's and Courtney's perspectives. I have never before read a book like this but let's just say I want to read more like it! With that said, I was a nervous wreck when it came to the end of the 2nd part. I knew what was about to come and I just didn't want to go through it all over again! Anyway, I barely made it through but am so glad I did! The relationship between Ethan and Courtney was a magical and emotional ride. These two are deeply ingrained into me. I felt like they were my closest friends and I will cherish the memories I had with them with all my heart. I miss them so much, I just wish Nicole kept writing books with them forever. Ethan made me feel so many emotions that characters rarely do. He disappointed me, scared me, excited me, broke me, mended me, melted me, and so on. I absolutely LOVED the banter with his mom, those two made me cry from laughing so hard. Only minor criticism I have is that I didn't like how the dialogue included "Haha" in it, it seemed like a text message to me. Other than that this book was everything and more! I couldn't have asked for a better ending. My heart swelled with so much happiness that I had to take a couple of days for me to be able to separate this world from the real world.
Holy gravity and guitars!!! Let me apprise you about my love for this title and cover - #obsessed
I LOVE IT HOW THE SEQUEL WAS AS GOOD AS ITS PREDECESSOR.
What a roller coaster ride of emotions! This was not entirely a happy, fluffy read, and it wasn't entirely enveloped by the throes of gloom and heartbreak. A perfect, bittersweet romance that tugged at my heartstrings, brought tears to my eyes, melted me into mush, and yes, ignited hues of pink in my cheeks - the epilogue was so impeccably written - I couldn't wipe the goofy grin off my face. I loved this book.
The story is divided into three parts - In part one - events of book one are recalled in Ethan's perspective. I like it how Ethan was given as much importance as Courtney. Not many authors do that. But I kind of didn't like the way things were in his head, that isn't stopping me from appreciating the author's efforts.
Part two - Ahh. The fateful night came and all my insouciances evanesced. The cornucopia of feels! At first Ethan was like Monday or that person who shows up uninvited to the party. Later, I acclimatized to him. It was like - realising that Mondays are not always bad, or the uninvited person actually turns out to be a jolly company.
Part three - was the best! It mitigated the dreariness of part two and I loved it so much. I am gonna reread it again. This part also made me laugh like crazy. You know? -clutching stomach-eyes brimming with happy tears- yeah, that type of laugh.
Ben. *love struck* The debonair gentleman, Ben. Let me just say it - I FREAKING LOVE HIM. YES, MORE THAN ETHAN! HE IS PERFECTION.
Good books with good quotes are like doughnuts covered with sprinkles. Now, I ask you, who likes quote-less books or doughnuts without sprinkles? Here is my favorite sprinkle covered doughnut, I mean quote =D "He was going to attempt to chase gravity - he needed the feeling back that he had when he was touching her, like the world was theirs and she was the strongest force of his universe."
I just adore Courtney, Vanessa, Ben, Luke ( he is hilarious), I did like Ethan's mom, but Courtney's mom is the boss, she has no competition whatsoever. Sorry, Ethan's mama *looks apologetic*
Of course I recommend this book to people (especially girls ;) who are 16+ And yes, in this one too, doughnuts will be served ;)
I want to start this review by saying I got this book in exchange for a review from the author. In no way does this affect my review.
I loved this book so much! The first book in the series was amazing and this one was even better! I loved reading the first part of the story from Ethan's point of view. And then the continuation! I'm so thrilled with the way things panned out! I couldn't have imagined it better! I relate so much to Courtney, it's like she's inside my head sometimes! Can't wait to start the next and final book in the series!
I was sent a novel by the author in exchange for an honest review.
If you read my review for the first novel in this series you know that I absolutely loved it, and was completely devastated with the ending, but I forgave the author because I had the sequel; which I was able to start Immediately. Just when I thought I couldn’t love Ethan any more I get the sequel written in his perspective and I fall for him even harder; his character growth was immense in this book and I loved every single second of it and the way he treats Courtney had me in the clouds! I loved Courtney so much, she has come a long way her character growth is the most noticeable; even though at some points in the books I did want to tell her to relax a bit and deal with things as they came, but that just wouldn’t be like Courtney.
I loved how the author made this novel show the real struggles that all couples have and showed us that both characters had flaws they had to work on, and how their love for each other was so great that they learned to see past their flaws and love each other more because of them. I have really come to love these characters, I don’t think I have ever read a book where I can relate with the characters so much or where I can see myself meeting them in real life and becoming best friends with them. The ending for this novel could not have been more perfect! I was in tears and just wanted to pull out all the characters and give them the biggest group hug. Another thing that I love about these novels is that in the beginning of every chapter there is a song title and the author has made a playlist you can listen to as you read, it just takes the reading experience to a whole new level, it makes you feel closer to the story and the characters.
If you haven’t picked these novels up, I highly recommend them! I devoured both book in less than a week. It is the perfect summer read or if you are looking for a good contemporary read.
This story, oh my goodness. After reading the first book, What Comes of Eating Doughnuts with a Boy Who Plays Guitar, I absolutely fell in love with the story of Courtney and Ethan. I just knew that I would enjoy this story equally. That being said, I think I loved this book even more (which is saying a lot). Hearing Ethan's thoughts put a whole new perspective on their journey; and it was beautiful. Experiencing his downward spiral, and then even more witnessing his climb back to the surface of reality filled me with a new appreciation of the power of love.
I am not by any means a romantic. I do not form an emotional connection to love stories - they just aren't typically my thing. There has only been one real exception to that rule. Until now. I'm not even sure what it is about this series, but my little cynical heart has grown three sizes upon reading the Gem City series.
Nicole Campbell has this talent for making the characters feel so alive and real. She doesn't sugar coat love, or make it seem unrealistically easy. It takes effort and it's something you have to be willing to fight for. I think that's what makes it so great. I can see myself being Courtney (or even Ethan at times, especially in How One Attempts to Chase Gravity).
By the end of this book, I was an embarrassing mess of gross (happy) sobbing. It was by no means a pretty picture. As I sat alone at work, I was lucky that there was no one around to witness my less than attractive blubbering about how beautiful love was and how I just wanted Courtney and Ethan to be happy.
It was a beautifully written story, and I am so happy to have stumbled upon this series. Kudos to Nicole Campbell for another amazing story!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As soon as I finished the first book, I couldn't wait to jump into the second one, and I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed! I was lucky enough to be able to read the books back to back rather than having to wait for the new release, and I'm very grateful for that. I loved that we got to see things from Ethan's POV, and of course getting to see more from Ethan and Courtney. I was VERY happy with how the book ended and how things turned out for them. The only thing that could make it better is if we get to see more from Ethan and Courtney in the future.
If the first book broke me, this one put me back together bit by bit. I couldn't stop. True love is amazing to watch. After I finished, I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about these two.
Their love didn't end when they broke up. it was only put on hold until they were ready to deal with it. Here we see two people who've matured immensely and learned from everything they did wrong. They're still messing up, but they aren't letting it destroy what they have.
"She hurried back into the house, no longer a single girl. Were you ever really single after you saw him anyways?"
I read What Comes Of Eating Donuts With a Boy Who Plays Guitar and absolutely fell in love with Nicole's work and her characters. Her characters came to life and became some of the quickest friends I have ever made. After that, I knew I needed to read the rest of the Gem City books.
How One Attempts To Chase Gravity is book two in the Gem City series. I absolutely loved this book because the whole first half was basically book one, What Comes Of EAting Donuts With a Boy Who Plays Guitar, but from Ethan's point of view. As the reader, I felt very lucky to learn about how Ethan was feeling when he and Courtney first met, when courtney moved back home, and when they started having problems. This books makes you realize that there really is two sides to every story. After reading Ethan's story, it is a bit easier to really grasp what was happening and why the characters felt the way they both did. I am so thankful that Nicole decided to let us see into Ethan the way she did.
"He was going to attempt to chase gravity- he needed the feeling back that he had when he was touching her, like the world was theirs and she was the strongest force in his universe."
In the first book, we learn that Ethan and Courtney make the most perfect couple ever!!! The only downfall to their relationship is that Courtney lives far away and will have to go back home when summer ends. They both realized that they can't handle the distance so they end up breaking up. In book two, we quickly learn that Courtney and Ethan chose to go to the same college. This means that they are definitely going to see each other eventually! Now, I could go into detail about what happens when the two finally do see each other, but then that would give away part of the story. If you would like to know what happens then I highly suggest picking up a copy of this book! All I can say is that when these two finally see each other again, their worlds forever change! The Gem City series definitely does not disappoint and I am very confident that you will fall in love with the characters and Nicole's writing, just as I had.
I loved everyone of these books in the series, and if two people ever belonged together it was Courtney and Ethan for sure, find out why for yourself, pick it up today and read them all. They are fast and easy reads, loved them ALL!. I recommend this book to everyone. 💖💖💖💖💖
Ok, so I'm not gonna lie, I loved the ending of this book... but!... I do feel that this could have been done in one slightly longer novel...
I downloaded the first book when it was free on Amazon and, to be honest I probably wouldn't have bought the second one if I had paid for the first, I'm not trying to be awful because I enjoyed Ethan and Courtney's story a lot (in the end) and I think Nicole did a fairly decent job of portraying what a long distance relationship would be like for a young couple... but I felt a bit cheated when the first half of the second book consisted of the whole first book from Ethan's POV... I'm not sure if it was trying to go down the 'Beautiful Disaster/Walking Disaster' road, which I loved, but it didn't really have the same effect...
Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of this story I loved, I think it would have been much better if it was dual POV's all the way through, but I swooned over Ethan and Courtney and am gonna keep an eye out for Vanessa's story too...
All in all it was a lovely young adult story with plenty of romance, hot scenes (but nothing graphic) and the ups and downs of finding, and holding onto, the one you love...
When my sister read the title of this book she was like,"Sis,even after exams, you are studying. You're never gonna improve! "Silently, I was laughing .I was like,"Dude, there is NOTHING about gravity in this book.If anyone of you thought the same thing, then my dear you are so very wrong. This book is unbearably good. It is contemporary at its very best. It will make you feel good about yourself. It will make you appreciate your friends. To be honest,I myself got very emotional at the end.I was thinking about my own best friend. I could totally relate. In fact one of the best things about this book is that it is relatable. And obviously, you've just got to FALL IN LOVE with the main characters. You'll love them so much that you yourself will be rooting for them to make up. Finally,I'll finish this by saying this series is definitely up there on my all time favourites list. And the author too. She's so sweet and I totally love her.(I love Ethan Fisher too ).
I really enjoyed getting inside of Ethan's head and witnessing the events of What Comes of Eating Doughnuts from his point of view. I think it could have been a bit shorter since some of the conversations/events were written almost identically--this would have been better executed if the books were in 1st person--but it wasn't too much of a turn off. It got much more interesting when Courtney leaves and we finally get to find out what was really happening in Gem with Ethan. It makes him a much more likeable character and puts the other events in different perspectives. The last part of the book took on a very cheesy, romantic vibe that still makes me a little naseous but I could deal with it since I liked Ethan's and Courtney's characters so much.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
*I Received a copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*
This book was amazing! I loved the playlist that Nicole made for this book, I had to listen to it everytime.
The story was amazing, but with this, it became soo full and much more interesting. I really liked how the characters grew form book 1 to this one, and Ethan told the story really war and didn´t sugarcoated.
I can definitely say I fell in love with them individually and as a couple.
I recommend this book for anyone who is into romance but with something extra and more intense, read number 1 btw!
Loved Nicole´s books and I look forward to reading more from her.
Just love. I completely adore this book. I liked the idea in the first book, but loved it through Ethan's perception. I loved his many transformations and getting into his mind. I think it's the most creative thing ever that each chapter starts off with a playlist! I even have found some new bands. I thought the first book ended perfectly and at the right point, but was glad to get to read what happened next. I think it's the sign of a great writer that can get you to enjoy a book, like non-stop reading, in a genre you don't read. Just love.
This book also contains what happened on book one but in the perspective of Ethan, it good but it could bore readers who just read the first one. Then the other parts were about what happened after. There were also a lot of scenes that didn’t help build the story. And because of that, I think the book got a little longer than it is supposed to. But I like this better than the first one.
This is a good book! It just didn’t kept my attention a lot of times. If you love young adult romance, give this a try!
How one attempts to Chase Gravity was a great follow on book. I enjoyed Ethan's point of view, however I found this part of the book dragged on a bit for me, probably because I read it straight after book 1, so the events were all fresh in my mind. The story moved onto a sequel about halfway through and from here on I was hooked and couldn't put it down. The booked finished nicely (no cliff hangers) and tied everything up.
