I feel like I need to break my review into two parts. First, while the romance was not my thing: Jake decides all women are untrustworthy after one bad relationship. Then when he tries a second time he's given information about the new woman that he doesn't talk to her about he just assumes the worst and sends her a Dear Jane letter. What I really find hard to believe is that such an incredible woman is still single 15 years later. Ignoring the romance I found the story confusing. It was almost like reading the second book in a series without reading the first. Based on the title I expected more of Jake's story in the military but it just wasn't there. When Jake leaves Mel he is in Korea and then the story jumps ahead without explaining that Jake is then stationed somewhere else. The book definitely had great potential and maybe it will make more sense after reading Mel's story.

Powerfully gripping story about a man who has always know what he wanted to do with his life, what he wanted to be, and does just what he had set out to do. But he does seem to lose something of himself after wounded in combat and returning home. Something that he needs to fight to get back.

This book is so very well written with a storyline that will grip you and bring you right along with Jake through the heartbreak of his first love, finding new love, heading overseas where he's stationed in the army, and then again, the heartbreak of losing another love. Then there's the things that happen while he's on tour that bring his past and his present crashing head-on, when he goes to see about one of his men, his best friend who was wounded and talks to the surgeon who is working on his friend. It's her!

The characters are very well written and quite well developed. Jake know what he wants to do with his life, and he goes for it. He's wicked handsome, built and he's finding it hard to believe that women can be good for anything other than a one night stand after his girlfriend plays him when he goes off to college.

Mel is smart, sweet, beautiful and she's the one that makes Jake think that maybe he was wrong about women. And she loves him as he does her.

This is a wonderful beginning to what promises to be an amazing series(?). I look forward to reading To Hell and Back: Mel's Journey.

Surviving Hell: Jake's Story was a super fast paced book, that packed a punch that I'm not sure that I've recovered from. It's started when he was young and dumb, before love jaded him, which scarred him a tad bit. He decided to stay away from relationships until he comes face to face with Mel, and he started to believe that they had a real chance. Then a letter comes to change their course, which broke both of their hearts. But fate wasn't done with them yet. This story was extremely easy to get engrossed in, and I love a fast paced book with emotional angst levels off the charts, but, (and this is MY OPINION AND FEELINGS), it was too fast for me to really imprint on the characters like I need to, especially Mel, (not that I didn't love Jake even with his questionable decisions) but there seemed to be too much in a short length. However, that doesn't take away from the talented writing style that I saw in Annalise Blaze, because at the end of the day, I still find myself needing MORE of Jake & Mel to find out what will happen with them. Thankfully, I read to the very end, so I know that there is another book from Mel's POV, and I can't wait, as I believe that will help me having both sides. So with all of that being said, I HIGHLY recommend this story!

Annalise has written a great military romance story. It has you feeling sorry for the main characters and their journey through combating the army life and love.

The main character, Jake, has his work cut out for him in trusting women and only see them as a means to his sexual conquests. Mel on the other hand is exactly what Jake needs, but one little lie tears their journey apart even before it's begun.

This storyline was great. However to me it felt too rushed, it went from one story after another without connection I needed. I wanted to feel more with these characters but I just couldn't get that high you get from reading their story, because there was no depth there.

This book for me would have had so much potential, if it wasn't missing the thrill of the chase and the heartfelt wounds Jake had to endure; especially with his time in the army.

**I received an Arc for an honest review **
This book was labeled as a short read, and did take about two hours for me to read. So if you're in the mood for no-nonsense get in and get out like true military fashion, this book is for you. However, if you're looking for deep details and an intense storyline this is not. I actually felt like it was a story retold by a friend. All the important details and no more. So really if you want to hear a story of a miss communication and second chance romance with a military man then read on peeps.

I could not put down this quick story. It held my attention, though I was a bit disappointed that it was not an HEA. I really wanted to see how it ended. Mel and Jack connected, before he entered the military. Misunderstandings, injuries, and more affected their relationship. Apologies were coming and hopefully acceptance and forgiveness in the next book. I felt it was worth the read.

This is my unsolicited review.
