LAPD homicide detective Cara Mullins and her partner, Detective Daniel Cheswick, are tapped to investigate the strangling of a young girl from a wealthy and influential family tucked away in the Santa Monica Mountains. Their suspicions are immediately aroused by apparent dysfunction within the victim’s own the mother and father are sleeping in separate rooms; the victim’s mother has an addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol.

As the case unfolds, the detectives unearth one dark secret after another. Mullins and Cheswick discover that the underage victim was having an illicit affair with one of her school teachers and may have also been the victim of sexual abuse within her own family. Every attempt the detectives make to probe deeper into the victim’s family is circumvented by their superior officer, Captain Ivers, who is driven by his own shadowy motives to redirect their inquiries.

Mullins becomes convinced that Captain Ivers and the victim’s father are colluding to frame the victim’s teacher for the murder, and fears they may eliminate anyone who stands in their way. Cara beseeches Cheswick to help her, but their partnership is in tatters.

Now suspended from the force and struggling with a devastating past that has come back to haunt her, Mullins must somehow catch a killer, save her career, and bring down a powerful conspiracy.
