In the summer of 2015, history teacher Chuck Jager hopped on his bicycle in downtown Detroit and set off across Michigan. Over a five-day journey, Jager retraced the old Territorial Road, the route of Michigan pioneers in the 1830's. In Pedaling the Pioneer Path, Jager not only shares his adventures, but also the history of the road and the sites along Michigan's 19th century Main Street. Part history, part travel guide, and part memoir, this book will take you on a bicycle adventure across Michigan and back through the past.
A well written narrative nonfiction about biking the Territorial Road from Detroit to Benton Harbor. Chuck Jager weaves historical details about 1830s Michigan travel with personal experience. As an avid biker, his bike was his ox and he had a wagon. Each five day experience is accompanied by a well drawn map by Janet Frazier and personal pictures. As a history teacher and reader, Jager included lots of quotes from Michigan sources. Just wished had included a bibliography at the end of his book. Delightful narrative for history buffs and bikers. Looking forward to more books by Chuck Jager.
