So I've been getting into the gym and I know I need to tighten up my diet a bit in order to see some results so I went through the cook book section and found 28. Now I'm normally a little wary of anything that has a b-grade celebrity on the cover but he was a PT before he was on TV and he was smart enough to actually recruit a nutritionist with actual knowledge of food and cooking so I was willing to take a chance.
At first I was really impressed: Its laid out really well, the recipes use mostly really normal ingredients I could find in the supermarket and the portions were not ridiculously tiny. So far, so good.
And then I sat down to write a shopping list and I started to have a few issues. There doesn't seem to be an awful lot of real-world budgetary or wastage planning to have gone into the menu plan. I made a list of what I would need to buy to feed myself only for one week following this plan. AND IT IS HUGE!!! It includes perfectly reasonable things like broccoli and fish and feta but in amongst that there are things like 4 iceberg lettuce leaves - 4 leaves! I don't know about you but I have never bought iceberg by the leaf - What am I supposed to do with the rest of it? There is also 50g of Greek yoghurt required along side 60g of plain yoghurt. Now, I'm a pretty confident cook, I have no trouble swapping out ingredients but there are many people out there who like to follow recipes to the letter and each of those people are going to be buying two slightly different types of yoghurt and having it sit in the fridge and go off after using only small amounts.
There is another peeve I have with these recipes - inconsistent measures. For example one recipe asks for 50g baby spinach and the next recipe asks for 2&1/2 handfuls so If I'm in the supermarket and looking at all the different size bags of spinach what do I get? This might not seem like a big deal but seriously how hard is it to write in a recipe 2 handfuls or about 100g? Why inconsistently do one or the other but never both. I'm only using spinach as an example here this was done multiple times with many ingredients. (50g of Asparagus + another 3 spears = I have no idea how many or what they should weigh in total). Compiling the list itself was a brain workout because you see, while some recipes are for one person the next might be for 2 or 4 or 6 or even 10 servings. Sometimes it serves 2 and that's fine because half becomes the next days lunch but keep an eye on that because the next recipe only serves one and to get your leftovers you have to double it. And then there was the random midweek breakfast that served 4 when all the others had been single serves. Maybe there is a rhyme and reason to this quite frankly weird set up that would reveal itself to me if I stuck to it but NO! Just no! Pick a number and stick to it! Make every recipe fit that number. It really isn't that hard, people.
I do honestly think that if you stick with this plan you will lose weight but for me it is just too freaking complicated! So I will pick the occasional meal to work into everyday life but I will never follow the meal plan. The recipes I have followed have all been good and tasty. I have no issues with the actually food I just think this book could have much better executed with a bit more planning and some actual, real-world people trying to follow it.
3 Stars - Having read this book I don't think the diet suits me. Firstly being on a strict budget if I had to buy all the ingredients for every meal plus snacks my grocery bill would be double what I currently pay. Also if I had to make the breakfasts and lunches before I went to work each day I would have to wake up way too early. As for the exercise side of things is really good and would suit anyone's lifestyle. Very easy to follow and has different levels from a very beginner to a gym junkie.
