Caillou - la dispute

Rate this book
Caillou is nearing completion of the beautiful castle he’s quietly building in the living room when little sister Rosie stumbles right into his building block masterpiece. Absolutely furious that his castle has been destroyed, Caillou yells at Rosie, who starts to cry. Mommy comes into the room and, after carefully listening to Caillou, calmly explains that, while what Rosie did is clearly very annoying, she’s just a little girl who didn't realize what she was doing. The Big Dipper series is designed to help children choose the best path to follow to enrich their lives and to help them navigate the ups and downs of emotional development. With Mommy’s help, Caillou takes his first steps toward tolerance and learning to compromise.

There were a lot of reasons I disliked Caillou when my kids watched the show on TV and this book kind of underscores all of that. First of all is the way he reacts to the destruction of his castle - the whole "I hate you" thing. The parent sympathized somewhat...but she never addressed this statement and I rather wish she would have. I don't like kids using the word 'hate' - especially in regards to siblings. There are many ways to address the issue. Ignoring it isn't one I approve of.

I don't like how the characters seem flat. I don't like Caillou's whining and complaining all the time. I don't like how he eventually gets his way (even if he had to loan out his stuffed animal to do it). I don't know...maybe this book just hit me wrong. But I just didn't see much I liked here - in content, in lesson given, or overall tone. There are such better things out there to give your child to read.
