When Gramp falls ill one summer, thirteen-year-old Morgana and her younger brother take charge of Gramp's Key West sponging business so the family can stay together.
When Morgana's grandfather gets ill, she and her brother must try to run their sponging business by themselves. She must learn to overcome her weaknesses and she grows through the experience.
This book was calm. Not much action takes place, but all the sea analogies and metaphors tie the book together nicely. This is a good one to use in discussing death, as it shows how the Mason's deal with their grandfather's death. It also would be good in discussions on responsibility and having faith in one's own abilities.
