As Milla McCracken and Leo Labrot prepare for a very important day, they have strangely similar experiences by separately bumping into two very different people.
Senator Coraleigh Boyle and Clay London.
Leo discovers Clay as they both buy very special gifts for loved ones. And Milla gets to know the young state senator, grateful for her help and new friendship following a near-disaster.
Yet as the newest supreme court justice and the new supreme court clerk both can sense—something is not right with their friends.
On the outside, Clay and Coraleigh appear to be nothing but successful. But supposedly enemies in a still-raging feud between powerful families.
But as Leo and Milla come to know, looks can be—and are—deceiving.
Backset, a 25,000-word novella, is the third work in the Bourbonland Short Stories and Novellas series. This work takes place shortly after the end of Notice of Appeal (Bourbonland Book 2) and overlaps with the beginning of Where the Fire is Hottest (Bourbonland Book 3).
Jennifer Bramseth is the author of the Bourbon Springs Series and Bourbonland Series of contemporary romances, and the Devil Springs Cozy Mysteries. She is a Kentucky native and lifelong resident who lives next to a horse farm and within minutes of several bourbon distilleries.
Backset by Jennifer Bramseth Bourbonland Novellas #3
What a brilliant idea to have novellas between novel length books in a series – shorter stories that catch the reader up with some of the characters they have been wondering about. I know that I am going to have to wait to find out if/when Coraleigh Boyle and Clay Maddox London get their happily ever after so finding out what the two are doing and whether or not their paths cross at times is a very positive thing.
In this short but sweet story we catch up with Leo and Milla as they prepare to say their wedding vows. Their story, Notice of Appeal, was a delightful and complex one. Seeing how the wedding is coming along and then is carried out was splendid. Add in learning more about Clay’s reprehensible father and the way he has been treating Clay’s mother along with how Coraleigh’s father is doing after the loss of his beloved wife and this tale is one that I whizzed through but then when finished I found myself wantng to know what would come next in the Bourbonland series. Well, it won’t be Clay and Coraleigh who step into the limelight but instead Maisie Chaplin and Cord Bilton AND I am eager to read their story then read another novella and see if THEN I will find out whether or not Coraleigh and Clay get their HEA in book five OR if I will have to wait some more.
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Backset is a rest stop on the road to something more. A chance to reconnect with old friends, be introduced to new ones and get the back story on an upcoming read. Ms. Bramseth entices readers with her small town characters and big city drama. The mystery begins with sharp dialogue and smartly presented characters to guide the way.
As I have come to expect by all her stories, old series or new, my attention was captured from the very beginning. Certainly having characters, or the mention of them, from her earlier series definitely helps to garner that enthusiasm...yet it's her writing that is the true draw.
In this novella, though short, the emotions that the story evoked were second to none. Between Leo and Milla's wedding, and the heartbreak of Clay and Coraleign's history, I certainly came away with both joy and sadness. One can only hope that Clay and Coraleigh will one day be able to overcome old anger and pettiness, not between them, but their fathers, to finally find their richly deserved HEA. Until then my heart will continue to break for the seemingly insurmountable obstacles their selfish families have burdened them with.

Backset is a sweet story featuring Leo and Milla's wedding. We get to see events leading up to the wedding and then attend the wedding, which was held at the beautiful Riverheart where Leo and Milla live. We also get to catch up with Clay and Coraleigh as their lives intertwine with those of Leo and Milla. Clay and Coraleigh are still suffering, but they did manage to talk a bit, that's some progress! I like how the author fills us in on characters from previous books, it helps to keep them fresh in our minds and it's always fun finding out what they are up to. I am looking forward to the next book. I truly appreciate receiving this ARC from the author. Thank you!
Awwww, so sweet to read the beautiful fairy tale story of Milla and Leo's wedding. A whirl wind meeting and courtship brought them together and finally a small and intimate wedding at, of course, his family estate, Riverheart. However, before the big day each will come across two others who continue to experience unrequited love. Coraleigh and Clay continue to struggle with feelings they can not act upon due to the feud between their fathers. Will they ever find the kind of love and happiness that Milla and Leo have? Only time will tell... and maybe the next book or two!
I really loved this Bourbonland novella with relatable characters and a story so well-crafted you feel like you are in Kentucky and completely involved in what's going on. I really liked the wedding of supreme court justice, Leo Labrot, and Milla McCracken, the clerk of the supreme court. I also hope that Clay and Coraleigh will have a chance together. Ms. Bramseth has given us another winner and I look forward to more from this talented author and Bourbonland. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Never disappoints! This is another great one by Jennifer. I am always excited to start her next book and always sad when it is time to say good-bye. I am SO ready for Coraleigh and Clay's story. I recommend this entire series and the Bourbon Springs as well. They play so well into each other. Always be sure to read the bits of Kentucky and distillery information Jennifer leaves at the end of the stories. Some very fascinating stuff.
Jennifer has done it again. Believable characters that make you love them, feel for them, even dislike them in a storyline that sweeps you through my beloved Bluegrass state.
In this novella, the reader learns more about Corrie and Clay, all while we participate in the preparations and the wedding of Leo and Milla.
Backset is a wonderful novella that leaves you craving for more.
I am in awe of this story! All the emotions that pop up, from love and grief, to moments of confusion over things as simple as buying jewelry for sweet moments. I love how there men in this story own their bafflement of their loved ones and their need to make sure they know and feel they are loved. My heart is always filled with joy when reading this series!
I loved this book so much! I so wished it was longer because it so reminded me of the 10 years I lived in Kentucky and which I miss so much. The descriptions of the scenery, I can picture it in my mind right away. This story was a great way to wrap up about one couple and possibly start with another.
I love spending time with my friends in Bourbonland. Leo and Milla’s journey continues as we prepare for their wedding. As plans are under way, tragedy strikes when the dress shop burns down but Coralie to the rescue which saves the day for Milla. As we get to experience all the preparations with the love Leo and Milla share, we also get to experience more of Coralie and Clay’s struggles. These two people are so in love but family comes first and the rift between their families is too great to overcome. The struggles these two face are intense from all sides. I hope that one day they will find a way to happiness. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
As happy as I was for Leo and Milla and their wedding, I was more sad about the past family problems that have created such an obstacle for Clay and Corrie. Will there come a time when they can finally be together? It's painful, sad and depressing and I think it happens a lot in real life. I loved his sweet and generous jester on her special day. This is a wonderful romance series.
