Sightings: Akron Devil Pig

Rate this book
In 1908 reports in rural Indiana of farmers and livestock being attacked and killed by a swine with "glowing red eyes" began to circulate. By the time the story made it to the newspapers in Indianapolis those in the countryside had already come to believe they were dealing with the Devil.

The curious thing about this particular story is that it was remarkably well-documented considering the date and location—remote Midwestern farm community at turn of the century America.

Additionally, from the time of the gas vein being struck in Indiana (Eaton, 1876) where frightened miners believed they had breached the ceiling of Hell and supposedly released the satanic animal, to the time this same “monster” launched it’s final attack in Akron Indiana, the creature seemed to march a distinct swath north. A path of death and destruction. The stories, timeline and documentation paint a picture of an animal on a distinct track, at a specific time, leaving misery and ruin behind.

The farmers of the time had practical concerns regarding the safety of their livestock; as well as safety for themselves and loved ones. But amidst all this, the spiritual nature of this supernatural beast was not lost on the heavily religious area. And inescapable among these, was the story of Jesus driving the devil into a herd of pigs (Matthew 8:31) and the belief that ONE of those swine survived. To wreak havoc in rural Indiana in the early 1900’s.

Here is that story.

Never heard of this before, then couldn't put it down.

An incredible collection of stories from 1908 all about a very well documented disturbance in Indiana. I was not aware of this occurrence prior to seeing this "Sightings" book. I have to say that the research was well done and it's impossible to argue with the vast amount of documentation that exists on this topic. I literally could not put it down.

Terrifying Tales of the Devil Pig

I really enjoy this author's books, as they are extremely well researched and the sightings are generally told from the witnesses point of view. The Akron Devil Pig is a tale of terrifying encounters with a pig from Hell. It is a slice of Americana, set in 1908 and told by the many witnesses who encountered sightings along the way. It starts with the preacher who was part of throng that found it, how it got away, terrifying encounters until the final face to face. All told in the language of the day, so some of the language is unusual. A great short read. Be sure to pick up more in the Sightings series for more great scares.

With a name like the Akron Devil Pig, my expectations weren't high, and I expected some wild, unusual stories. From reading the book, I realized that the people in rural Indiana most likely experienced some unusual phenomena that couldn't be explained.

This is a collection of stories from people who encountered the Devil Pig. The setting is at the turn of the 20th century before mass communication. Most of the stories were word of mouth. Churches played a big part in spreading this phenomenon. Without proper words for what this creature was, the people felt that it was a being from hell, and thus the name devil. This book is worth the read if you are interested in folklore.

As if turn of the century rural America was not scary enough, "Sightings: Akron Devil Pig" by J. F. Rodo Rome plunges readers into the heart of pastoral nightmares. The author masterfully conjures a landscape where shadowy fields and remote farmhouses serve as the perfect stage for the sinister antics of the Devil Pig, blending rustic Americana with a creeping sense of dread. This entry stands out for its ability to make even the most tranquil countryside feel menacing, proving that horror can thrive in the least expected places. Tornadoes, thick woods, raging rivers … and, oh, we have this demonic pig roaming the joint.
