Wow. I loved it. Not only did this book give me a sharp window into one of the most important moments in Colombian history--the Bogotazo--it also offered a deep reflection on humanity's self-absorption.

As a reader, knowing that the Bogotazo is coming allows you a godlike awareness of how the world and one man's life is about to change. To that end, it's laughable (as a godlike reader) that the main character sees himself as having the potential to escape this destiny. What's more, he believes he "caused" the event through his actions! It's a powerful meditation on our self-absorption and the persistent belief that the world and it's most important events revolve around us.
