Michael's Song

Rate this book
Many of us dream of being doctors, lawyers, pediatricians, or even the president of the United States. We have heroes that we look up to, and role models whose actions become our blueprint as we journey into adulthood. At no time do we dream of being abused, beat into silence, or screamed at for making mistakes that should be learning experiences. The scars on our bodies should be the result of simply being a child, falling and rising to our feet; sometimes shedding tears, and other times smiling while shaking off the pain.

For Michael, being a child is nothing of the sort. Marked by scars that hold their own decisions to either spare him a lifetime of mental abuse or torment him each time he looks at them, Michael shares with us his songs of love, fear, and faith. He details how he was born into his mother’s sins and robbed of his childhood just shortly after learning right from wrong. Michael painfully walks us through the physical and psychological abuse that nearly claims his mind, body, spirit, and soul during his mother’s last days here on earth.

Michael’s Song is certain to touch your heart. Tears are inevitable as your emotions absorb what Michael is forced to feel every day of his young life. You might walk away from his songs full of hurt, pain, and grief. But you will be moved to help change a child’s—like Michael’s—life. It takes one heart to make a difference. Will it be yours?

Michael's Song is the story of young Michael and sadly sordid sex by his mother and the men that he has dubbed "uncles" is music to his ears. This horrific story needed to be told, and Pernitha Tinsley does an excellent job at telling it. The prose and imagery are rich and eloquent and dark. It's a story that has encouraged me to be sure that no child ever faces domestic violence and child abuse. How could a person harm a child? Sure a parent being on drugs can be the cause as is for Michael, but even that is no excuse. It's sad that many children in Michael's shoes grow up to be bad actors, sex offender, and criminals. The system is not fair to adults that have went through the same life as Michael and it's heart-wrenching to watch them be cast aside.

It seems that Pernitha has her hands full in the next book, as Michael has to grow, even if a little. How will he endeavor to handle the pressures of being raised by such an ill-equipped mother?

Highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially to social workers and lawyers, and college students studying to be the same. Everyone should hear Michael's Song to help turn off the music.

This story was a very difficult subject to read about. I personally come from a family where we (the kids) were in my opinion 'over loved' we were encouraged to thrive and maybe even a little spoiled.
This made Michael's Song a huge stretch of my imagination. I just can't fathom how someone could mistreat a person but especially a child.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who lived the life I did. Yes, I'm aware that abuse exists, but after reading this book, I honestly feel like I've lived it through Michael.
You will not be sorry for reading Michael's Song, I congratulate Ms. Tinsley for a job well done!
