Mr Darcy to the Rescue: A Pride and Prejudice Regency Variation

Rate this book
What if Fitzwilliam Darcy never travelled to Kent to visit his aunt, and thus never proposed to Miss Elizabeth Bennet? On the night before Elizabeth Bennet was due to travel north with the Gardiners, the Bennet family was rocked by news of Lydia’s elopement. Now weeks have passed and Lizzy fears she will go mad if she spends another day waiting for the mail. Lizzy feels she has no choice but to hurry to London, despite her sister’s protests. Fitzwilliam Darcy is shocked to learn what has happened to the sister of the fine-eyed young lady he met in Hertfordshire the previous year. He’s even more surprised to realise that his feelings for Miss Elizabeth are far stronger than he believed. A chance encounter turns both their worlds upside down, but is it too late to save Lizzy from ruin? Mr. Darcy to the Rescue is a sweet, clean regency novel told from both of our dear couple's points of view as they reunite in unexpected circumstances.

Mr Darcy to the Rescue: A Pride and Prejudice Regency Variation

This variation's Elizabeth Bennet was bent and determined to find her sister and the accursed wicked Wickham. Hunting the elusive pair in the dregs of London, she has convinced her father and uncle to let she and her Aunt search. Darcy has heard of the Bennets' misfortunes from Caroline, but doesn't know that the soldier is Wickham. On one of their outings, she literally runs into Fitzwilliam Darcy who is on a different unrelated task. Falling hurt to the ground, Darcy then saves her from being run over by a carriage. When her aunt faints, Darcy takes them back to Darcy House. For some reason the Bingleys, Charles and Caroline, are staying at Darcy House. Telling Bingley to stay elsewhere, Darcy sees to Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner. As soon as Elizabeth is able, she leaves Darcy House to renew her search for Lydia. Darcy comes to Gracechurch Street and proposes to Elizabeth, but she refuses him thinking he doesn't know of Lydia's scandal and she won't drag him into that mess. He is anger at her refusal not thinking beyond his own hurt. Elizabeth finally finds her sister and when she confronts Wickham, he laughs in her face about doing his duty to marry Lydia who is with child. Caroline has a friend that seems to keep her well informed about the Bennet family, and the story of a gentle woman confronting Wickham in a sleazy gambling hall, relates this to Darcy. Darcy fed up with Caroline, realizes that he now is involved in this mess with Wickham and sets out to find him. He also confesses to Bingley about Jane Bennet's feelings for him. Wickham marries Lydia and Bingley returns to Netherfield unfortunately with Caroline. Darcy is not with him and Elizabeth frets about not seeing him again to explain why she refused him. Caroline weaves her lies while he is not around, and when he does return, feigned an accident to keep him at Netherfield. Finding that this didn't work, she's furious and tries once more to separate them. This doesn't work either, and is in a pique of anger when her brother relates that Darcy is betrothed to Elizabeth. Darcy so out of humor with her antics, she's lucky she received an invitation to the wedding held at Pemberley, the estate that she was to be mistress of, in her dreams, at least. In the end, Darcy knew that Elizabeth was the only wife for him, and it was her wit that kept him on his toes. Trying to hide the fact that the Bingleys are trying to find a new estate near Pemberley, they joke the if he doesn't share his secret she'll have her mother come for the birth of their first child, and he counters that he'll ask his Aunt Catherine! As the pillow flies, the laughter builds and kisses follow, Mrs. Reynolds tells them breakfast is ready and saves the day. The only concern I had with this story is why in the heck was Caroline Bingley at Darcy House to begin with?

This variation had a differnt spin with Elizabeth searching for her sister in the worst parts on London, after learning that Lydia's elopment has stalled. The story line wasn't terrible, but I had a hard time liking Darcy for much of the book. Some of the endearing characters were missing, as well, that could have helped make things a little more exciting in this book.
