With full sheet music and lyrics provided, Animals Can Sing can either be a sing-a-long tale (by those who are musically inclined) or simply be read on its own, page by page, in all of its glorious color. Bumblebees, wolves, bullfrogs and more share their voices to the picturesque colors and shapes of nature which surround them, keeping them safe from predators, and enabling them to communicate different emotions to other animals of their species. When they all come together, however, the sounds take on a whole new meaning.
Beautifully presented, imaginatively written and highly entertaining to read, Animals Can Sing shows how each of the different insect and animal species in nature communicate their emotions in sound. Whether they are a lone animal or are travelling with a vast hoard of animals, each incredible sound is unique and allows it to be easily identified. Some make sounds when they are happy, angry or hungry, while others simply make sounds with the flapping of their wings when in a very large group. M.O. Lufkin has shown the many different ways and reasons that different species of animals communicate and, in providing the music and lyrics at the beginning, has also allowed the reader to incorporate the story with music and singing. I very much enjoyed reading Animals Can Sing, and I recommend it to all young readers aged 5-12, who not only enjoy the beauty of each animal species, but also love how it is incorporated into the natural balance of things, regardless of the musical talent of the reader.
