The third book in the Lone Wolf series is as good as the first two - even though it has a slightly different feel to it...
As usual, the story begins with Ace in deep, I mean really deep, trouble - and then Coyote saves the day:) (Well, you just have to love that horse:))
And then thanks to his new companion, a real life figure of James P. Beckwourth, Ace has to face one ridiculous adventure after another, each one getting more absurd and hilarious... until the one when the mood suddenly shifts and all things stop being so funny... That's the biggest twist in Ace's adventures so far, and I really liked that as it was so unexpected. I can't give you details not to spoil anything but for a moment there I was genuinely scared that Ace would stop being the Ace I've learnt to love so much... But luckily soon everything gets back to normal and Ace and Coyote ride away into the horizon - in search of a new adventure, to be sure:)
Eric T. Knight is a great story-teller, imaginative, creative, fantastic at depicting the scenes in an almost cinematic way, but what I like best in Ace's books is the humour, the play on the genre and the implementation of real life characters and events into the story in a very intelligent way. The author seems to wink at us saying: I know you know what it really looked like but, hey, what the heck, let's play with it and see how we can make it funnier:) That's what makes me wait impatiently for the next book in the series every time I finish the last one:)
