Teatime of the Living Dead

Rate this book
Andrew Hamilton believes in friendship, good theatre, and that Twizzlers are an underrated member of the candy family. He does not believe in magic. His current play is going great, until the actors playing the zombie horde turn homicidal. Zombie madness spreads through the city and the creepers have one thing in common: they all want to kill Andrew. Magic not only exists, it has rules and deadlines. If he can keep ahead of his stumbling and drooling fan club until teatime, he might survive. They're coming for you, Andrew.

I just loved this some what indescribable book. It isn't easy to put firmly into a specific genre or category. It starts simply when the Artist Director of a theater is stressing over his playhouse's production of a live version of 'Night of the Living Dead'. He has the regular stresses; dress rehearsal, last minute celebrity zombies, and a dead cat in a box. A month earlier he had been a auction date for a crazy woman named Raven who is described as A bad Sybill Trelawney http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Syb... including bad clothes and a bad accent. She has been stalking him for a while and creating chaos. On opening day she makes his car disappear, not magic just stolen keys. He's rescued from her spell casting grip by another woman who is the owner of the local new age shop. He heads for the theater and opening night. Imagine his shock & horror when at the final scene the Zombies become real and start attacking the audience.

This turns into about 16 hours of chaos, disaster, death, destruction. But along the way we get with romance, humanity and kindness. This isn't your typical zombie aka sparkly fun dead people story. The protagonist doesn't believe in magic until his new friend explains it like quantum physics and doesn't believe in Zombies thus the "sparkly fun dead people" moniker.

This isn't very scary but it is delightful

This is a multi-layered book and quite enjoyable to read. There is a little bit of everything in it: some edge-of-your-seat descriptions, lots of humour, a bit of magic and some romance too.

I have to admit that in the beginning it threw me a little bit that the book was written in the first person as the main character was male and the author is female but I soon adjusted. I enjoyed a little glimpse of the world of theatre too, which is not something I am very familiar with.

It is very hard to categorise this book, it really is. Yes, it has some descriptive passages about zombies and all that entails but there is a lot of depth also about compassion, about people helping others when the chips are down as well and I could just about "hear" Sonja speaking - there should be more Sonja's in the world.

This is a highly recommended read from me :)

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Are Sparkly Fun Dead People Chasing Andrew?

Andrew is the head of Actors Theatre. It’s all hands on deck as he frantically drives the cast and crew toward the opening of Night of the Living Dead.

Inexplicable things happen to Andrew. Are zombies real? Are zombies focused on him?

I loved the book. I used to work in downtown Louisville and the book is like returning for a visit. The author explores larger issues, such as the socio-economic forces at play in Louisville. She adeptly compares and contrasts the affluent East End and the crime-ridden, poverty-stricken West End, with some surprises that question long-held stereotypes. My favorite characters were Sonja and Jacqui.

Not kindle unlimited, which means it was one of those whine or ask the writer for a copy and read it, then blah blah free will review type thing.

This was definitely not the usual zombie type books, and parts could have been better managed, some things left out or not so much detail about them, to the point it was one of my hmmm it's a 4 1/2 so is it more a 5 or more a 4. Overall it was a good story, but even with my kindle for pc with audio set to high speed it took a while, so not really a short book for one sitting, but that is how I personally read them. So basically good read just take it in 4th or half a time basically or maybe it has an audio for people to listen to in the car or whatever and can listen to x amount of chapters at a time.

Lately I have gone back to reading books outside my normal sphere of interest. This one is a perfect example of a book that I enjoyed immensely despite my general indifference to zombies. The writing is so strong, the suspense so tight, the chase so enjoyable that I galloped through the story in half the time it would normally take me.

The premise is kind of fun: Andrew Hamilton is a successful theatre producer, getting ready for the first night of an exciting new production, called “Night of the Living Dead”. Small cast, large horde of zombies (30 locals, trained to perfection over a month, 2 media personalities added in for publicity reasons), spectacular, fiery special effects. The dress rehearsal is a smashing success, but on opening night, things quickly go very wrong when the horde of zombies start attacking the public, and it transpires that their ultimate, juicy target is really Andrew.

What follows is a nail-biting chase as Andrew tries to flee the growing, all-pervading threat. The detailed pursuit through downtown Louisville is so well documented that, at one point, I had the map out and was following the action from a virtual helicopter!

Many moral choices must be made along the way, and Andrew's character, already nicely developed, grows with each challenge. We all have our pet fears, weak points, and personal nightmares. Andrew is tested to the limit over and over again in order to survive, while he has to deal with the guilt of having unwittingly been the spark igniting the mayhem.

Tight, confident writing, impeccable research (the author really knows her theatre), a lovable protagonist put through the wringer, and a worthy romantic sidekick, sufficiently fleshed out to also elicit a strong emotional response from me (i.e. I loved her). There is a fair amount of gore, enough to satisfy the most blood-thirsty, but not so much that the squeamish like me will be put off. This story kept me on the edge of my seat right from the start, and provided a lot of unexpected subplots and enriching detours into the human psyche, and the nature of altruism. A lot more than a scary zombie romp, a thoroughly satisfying read with a heart-warming message of optimism and belief in the power of love, self-belief and the will to survive.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book. I have to say, the story has a good flow of events. I personally like how the story started. I was envisioning Raven in my mind and I don't know whether I am actually amused or disturbed by what I imagined her to be.

However, I just have some issues with the book. I felt like there are some parts that are missing. There are times when I have to return to the previous page to make sure that I did not miss one. I was also kind of disappointed with the ending. Well, not the ending itself but on how the problem was solved. I just felt that it happen a little too fast and quite easily.

All in all, it was a pretty good story. I liked the beginning and the middle parts of the story. I am not so sure of the ending though. Maybe, I was expecting for more plot twists before the ending. That's all. I enjoyed reading it though and the story was interesting.

[I voluntarily reviewed this book gifted to me by the author]

"The miserable have no other medicine but only hope."

When a stage production "comes to life" the gruesome results seem to be focused on the producer who simply cannot understand why he's the center of attention. Good vs evil: but who's who?

My least favorite type of books are horror. However, this book is actually written very well and with a sense of humor. The characters of Andrew and Trina are well written and intelligent. However, the character of Raven gives Wiccans a really bad name. I really don't like zombies so I cannot give this book more than three stars, and that's for the writing alone.

I couldn't stop reading!!!

I read a lot. I don't usually read anything that sounds scary but this just piqued my interest. I read it in one sitting! I had to know what happened next. I was so invested in the characters that I had to finish to see if they made it or not. I truly loved it!!!

This type of book is not normally my cup of tea!
However I found it to be a great story that held my interest to the very end.
