I've just finished reading Henry Wood's My Life of Music. It is a wonderful treasure trove of references to late 19th and early 20th century music by a vast array of English composers. He premiered an enoromous number of songs, choral, instrumental and orchestral works, a surprising number of them written by female composers. If you are interested in English music beyond Elgar, Walton, RVW etc you should read it.
