If Mom's Happy: Stories of Erotic Mothers

The path through mothering affects nearly every aspect of intimacy, identity, reproduction, body image, gender roles and expression, vulnerability, reciprocity, skin hunger, and so much more. Like great erotica, mothering explores the complexity of sexuality--the ache, the ecstasy, and everything in between.

From the introduction by editor Brandy
In the midst of a 15-year marriage with two kids, I was blindsided by a libido so intense, I had to start writing erotica just to channel those heart-pounding sexual fantasies hitting me full force any time of in the grocery store, at preschool parent meetings, even in Kindermusik class while singing A Ram Sam Sam across from an energetic teacher in a low-cut top. My sex drive insisted I pay attention to it, care for it, make time for it like I did my family. With a long-time partner, there were other benefits to a libido in more time devoted to us as a couple, playing, connecting, letting go. It required frequent date nights, plotting and planning, sneaking and giggling, hushed orgasms that made the explosion all the more powerful, and loss of sleep that was well worth it. All this made the sex more fun, more delicious, and more satisfying.

Studies show that women in their thirties and early forties are significantly more sexual than younger women. The result of this--or perhaps the cause--is that mothers are less inhibited, more in touch with their bodies, and more skilled at asking for what they want.

This collection features women in all stages of motherhood navigating the complicated but essential path through--in some cases, back into--a healthy sex life. They're single, partnered, straight, queer, young, middle-aged, in the United States and abroad. But for all of them, sexuality is woven into the very fabric of mothering.

I received an Arc for an honest review.

First I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of short erotic tales. However, this collection genuinely intrigued me as it features mothers. Mothers have to grapple with a lot of things that usually are not associated with eroticism or sex. They are overworked, they are in their role of mother full time, they have to fight not only with loss of sleep but with a new perception of themselves, that is caused by changes in their bodies and in their lifestyle and in their love-life.
This being said it is laudable to publish a book that focuses on them recapturing their love and their fun in making love - be it kinky, be it vanilla or otherwise. Each new story brought up a different aspect. The whole book celebrates the beauty of motherhood. And it celebrates their erotic beauty.

I bought this for the Sara Dobie Bauer story and I NEED YOUR PACKAGE didn't disappoint, of course. It has her usual blend of perfect metaphors, wicked humour, and sexiness. She captured so much of the un-glamour of being a new mum in such few words. Possibly my favourite line is when new mum Hannah is grumbling to herself about how unsexy she is:

'Neely pulled Hannah's hair again, then sucked a couple pieces into her tiny mouth. Hannah tugged her hair away. "What's that, Dayton? Oh, it's called Eau de Drool. A new fragrance, sprung from my stretched out cooch."'

So I came for Ms Bauer (so to speak) and would've considered that £4 well spent, but I got the bonus of sloppy seconds with more excellent stories.

I loved the range here - they weren't all about mothers at a certain stage but a real mix. Pregnant women, new mums, mums struggling with infertility, adoptive mums, mums of toddlers, mums of kids, mums of teenagers. Gay mums and mums into kink and submissive mums and dominant mums. Every story was unique, but threaded together in a pleasing way by the same themes of how identity and sexuality and womanhood are intertwined with motherhood.

I particularly enjoyed the stories that went beyond erotica and explored something deeper about motherhood:

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY by Jordon Monroe - a sexy, healthy BDSM tale (not domestic abuse dressed up as BDSM!) with the immortal line, "Did I stutter?", addressing the way our identities can change in the eyes of others when we become parents.

TOCKS IN MY TICKER by Pooja Pande. Like the first story, this captured the pressures of parenthood - including those that start before the child is even conceived - so eloquently in such few words and was still sexy. I'll be looking for more from this author.

PREGNANT PAUSE by Jennifer D. Munro which was probably my favourite besides Ms Bauer's. Again, this got all the basics of an erotic short story right but went beyond and said something poignant (in a wickedly funny way) about the psychology of pregnancy. Loved it.

NEED by Hollis Queens. Hot, sexy, and such a beautiful and touching portrayal of infertility.

This anthology made me very happy. :)

If mom's happy... everyone is happy.

This was a really fun collection of short stories about women recapturing the spark in their marriages or lives after they become moms. The stories were relatable to anyone who has a kid and wants to be desired for the woman she still is and not just be the mommy figure. Some of the stories were hot, some had me laughing out loud, but they were all enjoyable.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and voluntarily provided this honest review.

I'm honored to have my story, "Happy Mother's Day," included in this important collection. Each story has its sparkling moments, some more than others. I deeply enjoyed Munro's blunt language choices in "Pregnant Pause," which contrasted wonderfully with the cadence Pande applies in "Tocks in My Ticker." And let's just say I'll never be able to watch Disney's portrayal of Neverland after reading Fox's "Hook and Tink."

Many stories of erotic tales from a woman's point of view. They are all hot and steamy with different areas of expertise and fantasy. A decent read, I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

An interesting combination of short, erotic stories all focusing on mothers at various stages in their lives. The stories are very short, so there's not a lot of depth, but that's really not the point for this type of tale. Each story is a good length for a bedtime or "me" time read.
