Good Luck, Mr. Gorsky

Rate this book
A dark, biting comic novel. I was dazzled, surprised, excited! - Rick Moody, best-selling author, The Ice Storm I love this book! - Ron McLarty, best-selling author, The Memory of Running Good Luck, Mr. Gorsky, the first novel by 3-time Emmy Award winning comedian Dave Konig, is The Bowery Boys on speed in the wild, wild West Side of New York City of the early 1980s; cheap single-room occupancy hotels, crime, and Times Square sleaze. A more innocent time. Three teenage runaways - naive Danny Fisher, street savvy Bobby Boyd, and Bobby's delusional artist brother James Boyd - form a wildly dysfunctional familial bond. They dream, plot, and scheme to escape their misfit world through crime (a poorly planned robbery of valuable comic books), art (James is convinced his unsuccessful career as a graffiti artist will propel him to Hollywood fame), and a little help from a clown's car full of deposed Ping-Pong champions, fat junkies, washed-up boxers, midgets, aging Nazis, and enigmatic movie stars. Sort of like an urban Lord of the Flies - but with better jokes. Good Luck, Mr. Gorsky is, quite possibly, the Great American Novel.

Great Old School New York Tale

Dave Konig captures the essence of the dirty, seedy side of Manhattan in the early 1980s. His style is reminiscent of the gritty works of Jimmy Breslin and George Plimpton, but diverted into a sort of coming of age novel. Konig's attention to detail is impeccable. But more interesting is his clever and unique writing style that dispenses with many conventional expectations. And it's a fun read! I look forward to Konig's next book
