Richard III imprisoned the sons of Edward IV, his deceased brother, and afterward from 1483 claimed the throne as king of England; his death at the battle of Bosworth Field brought an end to the wars of the roses.

Richard III represented the last of the house of York and the Plantagenet dynasty. His last decisive defeat marked the Middle Ages. He provided the protagonist of Richard III of history plays of William Shakespeare.
