Jake Fletcher thought he’d been blessed among all men when he stood at the aisle across from his bride. How such an ordinary man like himself had won her heart still astounded him. It wasn’t until a month later that he understood what had attracted her attention and that discovery would drive him across the plains of Colorado and Kansas to find her, but not to bring her back to his ranch; he wanted her in the state prison for the rest of her life.
Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.
The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.
As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.
My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"
Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.
I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)
"And what did the doctor say?"
"I'll ask him when we get back."
"Yes, you will."
I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.
Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.
So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.
The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.
Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.
Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.
Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.
They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.
It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.
They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.
C.J. Petit tells a well thought out tale. Sadly there are still many Lucy's today. The lessons learned by our heroes have to be relearned ( or are never learned) by people today.
Interesting so far. Nora had complicated childhood and grows up to be strong, independent and wise. I enjoy C.J. Pettit’s stories and excellent talent writing.
Aside from the poor editing, weak storyline, and predictability, the book was a good way to appreciate how much I learned in English Class. Had I been less distracted by the lack of editing possibly I would given it three stars.
When Jake Fletcher met blond and beautiful Lucy at a church social he was smitten in a heartbeat. They were married a week later and enjoyed a month together that had Jake walking in the clouds. He came back down to earth with a jolt when he found out his attractive wife had sold all his cattle, emptied his bank account and skipped out of town in a hurry. Plain looking Jake had been had by a beautiful women he never thought would give him the time of day. Now he had to find her and try and get his money back. But he wasn't the only one who had been fleeced. Nora, plain, rather sparingly endowed and still a virgin had been swept off her feet by sweet talking Charlie, Lucy's real life husband. Now it was time for Jake and Nora to join together and get their revenge. A good story, as only CJ Petit can tell it.
A look into the psyches of how men perceive women. This western gives great insight of how these con-artists, were able to absconded their savings from both sexes. It was all based on looks and a person's insecurities. That's right, insecurities, knowing all long deep down that there's something wrong with this picture, but no, you get suckered in and "POP GOES THE WEASEL"your left holding no ASSETS all gone..kaput..and the con-artists have disappeared into the night..That's what happens here, but it has a lot of twists and turns some good and some not so good..It gets a little confusing with some of the misspellings and names of the characters, but on the whole it's a good story with a nice ending if your last name was "FLETCHER".
Nora Graham was an innocent victim of a man who just wanted to steal money by marrying a naive woman. But Jake Fletcher was a man who thoroughly enjoyed his three weeks of marriage with a beautiful women named Laura. He would have given her money as a prostitute fee if she had not insisted on marriage. Lol. Either way, he was a sucker and he admitted it and went after her to get his money back. Along the way he met Nora and her experience with the other part of the gang made him determined to go on and Jake found that Nora was every thing he was looking for in a wife.
Lucy Johnson was a con artist. She married Jake Fletcher then tricked him into going to Kansas City while she cleaned out his bank account. Lucy's husband did the same to Nora Graham. Together Jake and Nora chase them down. Spoiler Alert I was disappointed with two happenings in this book. One the two kids they rescued should have been adopted by Jake and Nora. Two the cow hand who had worked for Nora for years then fired by Charlie Haskins should have been given a new job by Jake. That would have given this book 5 stars from me. ☺
I find C J Petit's novels fun to read. This is my second one and I expect to read more. His stories are clearly set in simpler times but still have a lot of excitement included.
On the downside, he needs to hire a good proofreader. Many grammar errors and context meanderings infect the stories. I can sort out the story line in most cases but a reader shouldn't have that task.
Nora gets 5 STARS because it's that old west era story that is different and you haven't read yet. Action packed with an underlying cruelty, soul crushing to some of the crimes! Heartbreaking moments! Wonderful character build up of getting her self esteem, that Nora does. Shoot em ups gun fights that are thrilling. Lots of action, drama, intrigue, sex & love; so the ingredients for a fabulous read.
Nora and Jake have both been victimized by scam artists stealing everything they owned except their wrenches
Jake sets out to find clues to the girl that stoled from him and comes to Nora as the next on the list that's just been victimized by the gal's husband Charles. They decide to set off together to find these scam artists and run into danger and adventure and get to know each other on the trail.
The storyline was very good, but the reason for the four star is the fact that there was allot of rolling in the hay or bedrooms. Not interested in that so I skipped over some of that so I could go on with the story. If your interested in allot of sex then read it if not then I don't recommend this story.
Different as all of your books. I liked your heroine. I was married to a woman like that. She straightened me out but passed to soon. Course, we didn't start as young as your characters. I would recommend this book to everyone who is hard working, lonely and looking for a life partner. It will give them hope. PS. You still need that proofreader.
Jake had been taken by the beautiful woman Lucy. She had married him and then taken all of his money and sold his cattle. Now he was looking for her. She had done this many times before. Then he found a women who was also taken by Lucy's partner. Her name was Nora. They went after the crooks. And they found each other.
The author has a great variety of stories in his books and includes very descriptive details about terrain, ballistics, gun expertise, and terminology associated with law enforcement, farming, ranching and other occupations that apply to the story. His books an some of the most interesting reads!
I have read a few romance novels and found them interesting. This turned out to be an action packed romance novels done very well. Two people pushed together by the acts of unscrupulous people. Find together they become unbeatable. Nora is a piece of coal who is in reality is a gem. Very good read.
I feel like I know this author's voice. I have been reading his books for months. He likes women and it shows, no weak, timid, gutless females allowed. All his women characters grow and mature in to women of worth. Each story has its share of horses and gunplay, a clear look at the western family way of life.
Beauty is more than a pretty face and a fit body, and true love comes from the heart. Jake and Nora were both duped in a con game by smooth talking "good looking" crooks taking all have. They unite seeking to recoup their losses. In this adventure together they not only catch the crooks, but discover true love. An exciting read!
Great characters and a great story. This story is about determination and correcting bad judgement. It is also about learning about true love. The author once again provides a clear portrait of the old west. The Outlaws, the crooks, the lawmen, the various victims, and the efforts by two of the victims to get justice.
As I have written before in my review of Mr. Petit's novels that I am surprised when I reread one and have not done a previous review. I think all of his novels are just as enjoyable the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th time on some his early novels. Some of them still bring tears to my eyes and wish there was a higher rating than 5 stars.
I gave this novel an easy 5 star. I have done exactly what these seven men did. It is very easy to be duped by a pretty face. I am married to the most beautiful woman on earth.
Nora was a woman who had been abused and tormented for most of her life. She and the man she married were both victims. After they joined forces they became invincible.
Mr. Petit does an incredible job again of twisting and turning and coming out with an awesome ending. I have read many of his works and would be glad to share how happy I am with anyone. I know you will enjoy reading C.J. Petit.
Smooth talking scammers are easily relieving numerous people from their possessions. However, two of those scammed will not give up until justice is finally served. Another fine Western from Petit.
Mr. Petit, how do you do it? All your tales of the old West team with outlaws but most of all, they tell of descent folk trying to make an living! Thanks for another wonderful book!!!
Petit does not know that they ends with a y. He stated that he corrected a lot of mistakes when reviewing some of his old books. He should try reviewing books before publishing them.
Another C. J. Petit novel depicting a good man, a strong woman, and old fashioned justice, in the Western frontier! Also, a good lesson on looking at a person's inner qualities, as well as the window dressing of looks on the outside!
I haven't had a story with a moral in a long time. It was refreshing. I'll not tell you what it is either, and let you try to find it. C. J. Petit does an excellent job telling a story, and this one is no different. Good job sir, well done.
This author has gotten my attention thru these books. They are not just love stories but intricate plots with touches of the old West included. Its a just read
Interesting and entertaining story. Author does a good job of creating believable characters. A good western story about unusual con artists, determined victims and their journeys.
Good read and a more unique story than what the author has written. Enjoyable and entertaining. Author has many grammitcal/spelling errors which at times CA. Be distracting. I will continue to read more of this author's stories.
