I have always wanted to hike at least part of the trail. Not so sure after this story, which I loved! Vivid description of the trail, exciting mystery, and great story.

If you hike frequently, like I do, this book will haunt your overnight camping trips. Author Larry Greer's serial killer is a loner, like many who trod the Appalachian Trail (AP), but Greer's monster does his dirty work at night and lives in a secluded cabin close to the much vaunted path across the mountains. The story takes place in February, a dismal and lonesome time to trek the trail, and the victims chosen are attacked while sleeping. The gruesomeness of the killer's work is enough to keep a hiker wide-awake stoking a massive fire instead of resting after dark.
Greer's murderer has led a mind crippling life that results in antisocial behavior and beyond bizarre habits. He's a first-rate fiend in a chilling thriller.
Appalachian Trail After Dark could benefit from better editing and formatting. I found the multiple errors in the book's text distracting. The unusual layout also took some getting used to. The attention to details prior to publishing resulted in my awarding a solid horror story only two stars.

I was instantly hooked by the story and finished reading in one day. The author gets to the point and understands how to maintain the tension throughout the book. I can easily see this book being made into an exciting movie.
The only reason I won‘t rate this 5 stars are some minor spelling mistakes and grammar issuses, e.g. your vs. you‘re. At the end of the book, when the investigation into the villain’s numerous crimes takes place, I was a bit confused. The identity of the victim‘s head is revealed through DNA tests which, of course, didn‘t exist back in the 70s.
A solid 4****. Will take a look into the author‘s other books.
