Several of Lacordaire’s fellow editors – of L’Avenir and a kindred association – commissioned him to write this report, in their name, to Pope Gregory XVI. The point was to give to give the pope the group’s stance about their views and to justify their use of publication to make known the reasons for using the media in the defense of the Church.
