Goodbye from the Edge of Never takes place in future dystopian California, where the rise of zombies has meant the fall of civilization. Mankind hides in enclaves to avoid being killed or worse, being turned. Donathan, Mason and Ashley choose a different path, rushing out into the world to chase the sins of their past. When death comes after you, clacking its teeth, and hissing from the shadows, sometimes it's better to laugh, dance, and throw paint.
Before you read all that standard stuff below you should know that I'm kind of insane. My books have been described as Star Wars from the edge of a zombie apocalypse.
Steven Mix has worked with the autism community for a non profit organization and he was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army.
After suffering a traumatic brain injury in the military, he became obsessed with zombies and horror and now works to bring his darkness into the world in a fun and constructive way.
This is one of the most intriguing and thought provoking apoco zom novels I have read yet. It always makes me wonder........ "What is Mason going to do with his mask next?"
Quit lurking and start reading, as this is a guaranteed blockbuster in the making.
This isn't just your typical "doom and gloom. the world has ended. we're all going to die." post-apocalyptic zombie horror. It's got a ton of action, adventure, and most of all it has heart. You get to know the heroes, as you travel with them on their adventures. It's a fun read. It reminds me of the excitement that I felt reading comic books when I was in middle-school and high school.
Most people think post a apocalyptic and it's full of misery, death and pain. Steve Mix has created a world which is controlled by a corporation, takes place in a desolate, zombie-filled desert version of California, and has infused it with people who are actually trying to be happy. There's more hope and fun in this book than in the last five post-apocalyptic books I've read combined.
The zombies are unique, distorted mutations of the modern zombie, each with their own talents or powers. These present new challenges for the main characters, and each new zombie feels fresh and fun. While the zombies are certainly given their moments, they tend to be more background to the true antagonist in the book, the Falling Sands corporation, which maintains its control over the people still living in California through superior firepower, fear and probably a few methods we have yet to see.
Donothan, Mason and Ashley have been combing the California wasteland searching for the Princess, killing zombies and staying under the Falling Sands radar. This is the story of how they find her at last, and it all leads to a fantastic, epic final battle.
It's a fascinating blend of horror, action, comedy and straight fun, and you should all read it. I can't wait for the sequel!
Let me say first of all that zombie novels are not usually my thing. However, I am a big fan of horror. I grew up on Stephen King and I am always interested in any story that will give me the creepy-crawlies. I also like funny. Funny is always good.
This book gave me a good dose of both.
Some parts of this book are completely hilarious. Like, honestly laugh-out-loud funny. And other parts gave me the willies. I don’t know that I’ve ever read a fantasy horror novel like this that had so much humor in it.
I really enjoyed this book. I found it almost compulsively readable and enjoyed myself the whole way through. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes horror or fantasy, regardless of whether or not they’re a zombie fan.
Steve Mix has a was with the details that make these characters come alive. The detail in the dialog and the descriptions of the characters is great. The things that the members of the main group say to one another just pop right off the page. It brings me right back to those days hanging out with my buddies, the things that we'd say, the language that we developed to communicate within out group. You can tell that Mix has found a way to take that feeling of the tight group of friends and paint it onto the pages of Goodbye from the Edge of Never.
Donathan is a munitions virtuoso with inhuman speed, and Ashley a ninja-like warrior, expert both with and without weapons. (Her favorite is an aluminum baseball bat.) Mason is a machine-gun-wielding artist who has uncanny luck when it's most needed. They call themselves the ZCR (Zombie Civil Rights). Together under Donathan's leadership this trio of champions is traveling California seeking a woman known as Princess Jae at the mysterious urging of Donathan's father before he died.
As you'd expect, much of the action takes place when the ZCR encounters zombies. Here, zombies come is several different types (some possibly inspired by Kafka), each posing a different challenge to the intrepid ZCR team. These action scenes are my favorite part of the book, and they are plentiful. I felt like I could sometimes see Mix's military training/experience adding to the realism such as in the tactics. Understandably in a book with zombies, there are also some descriptions that are not for the squeamish.
In some places the exposition could have been accomplished a little more artfully, but overall I really enjoyed Mix's imaginative take on the zombie apocalypse and the heroes he populated it with. Plus, I will never look at a fire hose the same way again!
Note: I received a copy of this book for review through the Goodreads Firstreads program. Cool, right?
I have read a lot of zombie books in my time. I love them for the traditional aspect and did not think any deviation from the two set norms (slow moving shufflers and fast moving monsters) could be changed. This book did that and gave a completely new take on the genre for me. The characters are well put together, I could easily see myself having a beer with the three main characters, and the settings are beautifully written. This book makes it easy to see in your head. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series!
Goodbye from the Edge of Never is such a great book for many reasons. It's a fun read, that is so eloquently written. A lot of people mention that it's not your typical post-apocalyptic read, however, I would be a liar if I agreed. I'm not a zombie or post-apoc fan in any sense, but this book helped to sway me in that direction (like how Eminem taught you that rap isn't so bad). If no other books are like this, then that will keep me even more eager for the next novel in the series.
This book is a great read, not your run of the mill zombie/apoc story line. As a fellow veteran, I could see a lot of Steven Mix's military background in the book as well. If teachers are using it in their classrooms, that's gotta tell you something! Highly recommended!
This was honestly just an awesome book. It's not like your typical zombie books. It has plenty of laughs, awesome characters, and of course lots of zombie deliciousness!
This book wasn't what I thought it would be. Dystopian, yes, but a zombie novel -- not quite. They're there, and they're mutated into things that make it like a better version of Resident Evil, but the soul of this book is the culture that's trying to stay alive in the wake of the old society's collapse. Amidst the survival and the violence, there's a cry for art and beauty. Maybe my experience is limited, but I haven't seen that in the genre before.
How much I wanted to like this book, I just couldn't get into it. The story is interesting, the main characters are likeable, but as a whole it felt a bit sluggish.
I don't know if it just isn't the book for me, but all of it asks for a very fast paced story telling, which I missed. It all feels a bit like a very elaborate introduction.
Cleverly written! It's a Zombie Apocalypse, but not a run-of-the-mill story. Very detailed, great storyline, superb characters. It was hard to put down, but I had eat at some point!
A fascinating take on the Zombie apocalypse with an equally fascinating backstory for the author. Written with an insight and a dark humor that is uncommon for the genre, which is informed by Mix's own combat history. It's an easy read but not simplistic any way in the aspect of the character development or conflict. Worth a read and ponder, for sure.
Good read! not the normal kinda book I would read but my friend told me to read it so I did and I was pretty damn entertained. even if this genre isn't your cup of tea I would definitely say read it, you won't be disappointed.
Goodbye from the Edge of Never is an action packed, comedy filled, explosive book from start to finish. If I had to give a quick synopsis of it I would describe it as Star Wars meets a zombie apocalypse. It's entertaining, it's exciting, it's a blast. Give it a read, you'll enjoy it.
