I've owned a copy of this little book for years. It combines photos of dogs, and quotes about dogs, or mostly about them. The quotes from George Orwell's Animal Farm aren't just about dogs, but they fit the photos they accompany anyway.

I like this book. It is an interesting collection. The oldest photo is from 1912, the newest from 1990, but most of them come from 1930 to 1960. One thing about the way this is presented bugs me. There is no information about the photographers. I know in some cases there may not be any information available about them, but I would like to have it where it is known.

Despite this minor flaw, I like this book very much. There is an interesting range in the photos and there are almost no costume, or prop shot of the dogs. I'm usually not too keen on that kind of photos. Some of them I would be quite happy to have hanging on my wall. One shows a dog holding onto a little boy's jacket, so the kid can try to retrieve a golf ball without falling into the water. Really sweet picture.
