Brand new hardcover with DJ. 1974 original from Homer Tope Rosenberger. 212 pages. DJ has very slight tear on backside from bookshelf. Great collectible!
Interesting book written in the 1930’s, gives a brief overview of Indian attacks in Clinton County and the lumber industry with a few superstitious tales.
As a local history, this achieves its modest aim. If you're from Centre County PA with a moderate interest in history, I'm sure you'll find this a valuable and educational book. For someone outside that area, and I hale just outside the scope of this book, there isn't much enduring. Folklore apparently includes apple butter making and Fort Horn. The stories are the usual folklore full of ghosts and witches. But other than that, the stories are not very compelling. The book is what it is: a local history written by and for the people of central Pennsylvania.
I read this book mostly as research for my own novel. I went to college in Lock Haven, so I'm mostly familiar with the areas written about. None of the stories ls overly compelling, but the collection does give the reader a nice slice of life in the mountains of Pennsylvania.
