This very readable commentary on Judges and Ruth highlights how these books justify David's dynasty over Saul's dynasty, showing the superiority of the tribe of Judah over the tribe of Benjamin. Boda and Schwab integrate some of the best points from other commentators and give well-reasoned responses to them, especially toward defending earlier dates of composition. Both connect the books' themes with the ultimate hope of the Messiah King, Jesus, particularly as Schwab discusses Ruth as a story of redemption, of Yahweh restoring and providing for His people.

I typically like Boda. This book was a little lacking. I probably should have gone with his larger, single volume on Judges. I chose this because of time constraints. It is helpful in places, but I needed more information in others. He is a good writer and easy to read.
