Bullying is nothing new to Terrence Young. The teasing and harassment are constant. His family is less than understanding as well. To them, Terrence chose to be gay and complicate their lives. Their little rejections sting and cut him deeply. But when the Deviance Act is passed, Terrence's life takes a turn for the worse overnight. Under the new law, a mere look, a simple touch, or a small kiss in public could mean death. Terrence attempts to hide his orientation to survive. That is until a gang attacks him in a bar and Chase Martinez interferes. Chase is gorgeous, kind-hearted, and he's a rebel in the Underground—all qualities that attract Terrence so much there is no stopping the fall. Loving Chase might be dangerous, but Terrence is done living in fear and letting others dictate what is right for him. *Trigger Homophobia, biphobia, violence. *This story doesn't contain any spoilers. Everything revealed in this story is already revealed in the main novels. * The story contains a cliffhanger resolved in the main novels.

As noted by the #0.8, this story is part of a series. And unlike many other series where books follow different characters, this can't really be read as a standalone. I did just that, as this was the first I'd heard of this series, and while I was able to follow along just fine throughout the story, the ending is a MAJOR cliffhanger that I'm assuming is concluded in subsequent stories. So, just a head's up in case you're like me and unfamiliar with the series as a whole.
This series takes place in a dystopian America. The author includes a very informative reference list at the beginning of the story that was a huge help; even if you aren't someone new to the series like I was, I can see how the various names and settings and situations could get confusing. Having that reference point to go back to when I had questions was a really nice touch.
Terrence is a gay man in a world that views homosexuality as illegal; so much so that they execute people who have been accused of homosexuality - even without proof. This story was a hard pill to swallow at times because the world seemed so bleak. However, Terrence had such a bright outlook, wanting to see the best in people and in the world. He's such a sweet character. Along with Chase, who has a closet full of demons in his past, these two had sweet on-page chemistry and complemented each other nicely.
I'm honestly not sure I want to continue this series, as it does seem vast and complex and I'm pretty much solely an m/m romance reader. But the story and the world Alice Rachel created did intrigue me, so much so that I'm keeping these books on my radar. For me, that's saying something. If dystopian serials are your thing, definitely pick up this series. I'd recommend following the recommended reading order (starting with Under Ground). And maybe when you finish, you'll send me a PM and let me know what happens after this cliffhanger :)
Terrence: A short story (UNDER GROUND #0.) by Alice Rachel an amazing four star read. Could you hide who you are to save your life? Could you deny yourself the love you feel because a law states that you can’t feel that way, how would you feel if you wanted a simple kiss or holding your partners hand in public but if you did you could both be sentenced to death. Could you live like that? That’s how Terrence is forced to live as well as others, all because the Deviant act was passed and it means that he is no longer allowed to be who he is. Terrance has always been different and always been used to people treating him badly and bullying him because of that. What Terrance isn’t used to is someone standing up for him, and when a rebel from the underground steps in when Terrence is physically attacked he becomes so much more than the kind hearted, and gorgeous boy Terrance has seen. I loved this book, and Terrence so much, he made me sob for the battles he has faced, but I loved him and how he deals with it all. Having a favourite Under Ground book is like picking a favourite child, but I think we all know deep down even if we deny it in public we really do, and I know mine. This series goes from strength to strength, and gets better with every instalment, each story reveals more details and another part of the journey. Alice Rachel takes you to a different world and even though the story is short, it’s a compelling read that reveals more of the story than you think possible in so few pages.
Terrence: A Short Story by Alice Rachel Four Stars
Terrence: A Short Story is part of the Under Ground Series #0.8 by Alice Rachel. This set of short stories are small snapshots, most less than 50 pages, and written in different points of view. Therefore, they should be read in order to get the whole picture of this story. Terrence’s story is a bit longer being over a hundred pages. You really get a feel for Terrence who we first met in Akio’s story.
This is a Terrence’s story. Terrence Young has had a hard life, his parent believe he chose to be gay just to make their life more difficult. They are constantly rejecting him and the kids bully him at school, and just when he thought things couldn't get worse the government passed the Deviance Law. The Deviance Law has dire consequences, he could be put to death for one wrong move or even look. Terrence has tried to keep his orientation a secret for fear of reprisal until he meets Chase.
Chase Martinez is part of the rebel Under Ground. Chase has caught Terrence’s attention. The attraction is instantaneous. He must decide if Chase is worth the risk. Will they be able to overcome all the obstacles in their way. This is a fast paced story that will keep you on edge.
That is the thing about this series each little chunk is a block of time that you get with from each character's point of the same period. They make for very interesting chunks of the big picture.
Can I just say that I love Terrence? What an absolute sweetheart who has endured so much bullying and tragedy in his life. He and Chase - who has also endured a great deal of tragedy - are just perfect for each other. I don't want to give any spoilers for other books in the series, but this story left me even more heartbroken...yeah, that's all I'm going to say. Anyway, back to Terrence, just beautifully written, Alice. Absolutely beautiful. Well done! This story adds much depth and richness to the entire world of the Under Ground and the intriguing cast of characters that Alice has created.
This is my first time reading anything from the LGBTQ genre and it won’t be my last. This story in particular was in a dystopian world where being gay is completely illegal and you can be killed on the spot. It made reading this story about a gay young man much more terrifying.
What I loved about this short story was that it felt real. The emotions and the events that happened felt like something that could happen in real life. I loved the relationship between Terrence and Chase. There was some kissing but there was more emphasis on the actual relationship than anything else. I liked that because in this world simply holding hands could get you in some serious trouble.
This story kept my attention the whole way through and I really want to know more about these characters. The end left me wanting to know what happened.
Terrence: A Short Story by Alice Rachel is a short story in her Under Ground series and there is no doubt that Alice is a master when it comes to short stories. It is a great way to share with us more of the backstory to the characters we have met/meet in the main books and at times they help us to understand their motivation to the actions they take. Alice, you keep breaking my heart with your short stories, I am still haunted by Willow and Stephen and … well, you get the picture … Terrence is the story of … Terrence. It asks us to feel and put us in his shoes – could we hide who we are in order to save our lives? Could we deny ourselves the love we feel for another just because the ruling class and laws state that you are not allow to feel that way because if you do, you sentence yourself to death on sight? Could you live like that? I cried, oh my goodness how I cried … The battles Terrence faced … the love he felt … the loyalty he showed … the forgiveness he gave … If you have read the main books, do not skimp and skip the short stories! They are a must! And read them when they are supposed to be read!
This story was cute adorable but also powerful. It gave me a new perspective on what it's like to be Lgbtqia+ and how cruel this society was to them. Also it showed me that no matter what you should fight for who you love.
"Loving Chase might be dangerous, but Terrence is done living in fear."
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Alice Rachel and her books! Her books are really something special and I will forever hold each and every one of her characters close to my heart.
Rachel finally gives us Terrence's story and it is not a very happy one. Terrence's story broke my heart and he does not deserve a lot of the bad things that happen to him. Terrence is gay, which is a deviant act where he is from. Terrence could be sentenced to death for being gay. He is forced to basically hide who he is in order to save his own life. He also has huge family problems. Terrence is blamed for the death of his mother, his dad refuses to have a gay son, and his sister, Esther, is just plain mean. Terrence has a really hard life until he meets Chase. Chase is the first person to stick up for Terrence. Chase wants to protect Terrence. But what happens when Chase doesn't understand how important it is to hide that you are gay? Chase and Terrence are from two different worlds. Could this work?
Terrence is a short story that goes along with the rest of Rachel's series. The Under Ground series is something you guys do not want to miss out on! Rachel's writing is so inspiring and she really makes you see things and understand things. Her books are easy to relate to because we see a lot of things she writes about in today's society. I think that is a big reason that I love this series so much! Rachel really makes you feel as if you are in the story with her characters and I truly hurt for Terence when he hurts and I was happy with him when he was happy. I really felt his pain and that is how you know you are reading a GREAT book!
I really enjoy how Rachel gives us short stories focusing on characters from her series! It really allows the readers to get a better understanding of the characters and their background history. I just love everything about this series and I am a huge forever fan of Alice Rachel!
*Author sent me a free copy in exchange of an honest review.*
This is my second time reading an LGBT book. I didn't very much enjoy the first book that I've read (it was not written by Ms. Alice, btw). For some people, this kind of book might bother them, but this didn't bother me. This book is more than just a M/M romance.
This book is narrated through Terrence's POV and I love how the narration shows his character. This book focuses on how #Charrence became a thing. But at the same time, it also focuses on Terrence's (and Chase's) struggles. I really felt the pain that these characters feel.
Another thing that I like about this book is that it is also informative. I told you it's not just a M/M romance. It also tackles how people from the LGBT community feel and what are the struggles that they go through because of their orientation.
One last thing, when I read about Terrence in Standing Ground, I didn't get attached to his character. But this book made me care about Terrence, and Chase too.
That's the magic in Alice Rachel's books. She can write short stories and readers get attached to characters in just a short period of time. *wink*
The epilogue was kind of like a cliffhanger but considering this is just a short story, so it is acceptable.
I received this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review....
This book is the perfect combination of heartbreaking and heartwarming. I was cheering along for Terrence, who seems to have profoundly overcome to much hardships from his peers and family (which many youth can relate too) as well as touch some currently sensitive topics in today's world, as there are plenty of people out there who still frown about the homosexuality.
3.5/5 stars. A very good premise of what could happen in a world where you could be shot killed or arrested just for being gay. Or any of the LGBT community. But the execution of it was pretty simple. Almost too simple. I'd wanted more from the world around it rather than the relationship between Terrence and Chase. Nonetheless, this was a good (not great) read.
Heartbreaking, beautiful, deeply emotional story of a young man in a world where homosexuality is frowned upon and then outright outlawed. I fell for him and his love interest and both of them made my heart break for them. And the end? Oh my... Tissue alarm.
Terrence is part of a group of a short story collection called The Under Gound Series. This story is a little over halfway through the collection. Therefore, in the beginning, the author gives you descriptions of organizations and places that are explained in previous stories and also tells who the characters are from the other books which is very helpful. This is longer than any other short stories that I have read with one hundred and fifty-four pages. Consequently, I found it strange how the main plot is constructed out of a bunch of short stories. Whereas, the book was not hard to follow it didn’t contain much depth having more of a meager intensity. Though I found the story to be mediocre it incorporated some intriguing creativity within how society works, including the abhorrent laws that the people live under. Also, I give Alice Rachel a thumbs up for how tastefully she handled the intimacy parts and did not write anything graphic. Furthermore, one of my biggest pet peeves is when the ending is left wide open and of course, that was the case. Nevertheless, if a reader starts at the beginning of The UNDERGROUND series and reads "straight" through instead of reading one out of sequence you potentially could enjoy this series.
really love this book even if it was super short, I still love nonetheless. Back stories of every character from the original story is what I love the most. I appreciate their stories and adore their live, despite it being heart breaking. We all know the struggles of someone who is an LGBT+ in this society with the passing of the Deviant Act. I really love that we get to see their stories and that we get to understand the struggle. I adore Terrence more in his story, I used to not care much about him but with this book, you'll get to know him and understand him.
Terrance: A Short Story (Under Ground #.8) by Alice Rachel is part of the the Under Ground series. I would recommend reading the previous books in this series so that you have some background knowledge of some of the characters. This story is about Terrance which we seen a little bit of in Aiko story. One thing that I enjoy about this author is that we get to see some of the characters from the other books in this series. She also have great character development and her attention to details makes you feel like you are right there. The other thing that I enjoy the most with this authors book is her ability to pull me into the story from the first word. You will enjoy the connect these characters have and they are true to life. Find out what Terrance's story is.
Terrance Young is no stranger to being bullied, the teasing and harassment is a constant in his life. His family is less understanding of him. They think he choose to become gay just to complicate their lives. The sting is deep from the little rejections that they show him. Just when he thought things couldn't get worse for him, they passed the Deviance Law. He could be put to death with just one little touch, kiss, or a mere look. He tries to hide his orientation until one night when things seemed to change everything for him. This is when he meets him. He is strong, gorgeous, kind hearted and Terrance feels and instant attraction to him.
Chase Martinez is a rebel from the Under Ground. He is kind hearted and gorgeous. Terrance knows that loving Chase is dangerous but is he worth the chance? He is done hiding and letting people tell him what to do. He wants to be the one to dictate his own life not someone else. He is tired of living in fear. Will he be able to stop himself from falling for Chase?
Terrance is a strong character that has been through so much. The loss of a mother he never knew, having to hide who he really is as a person. I give him a lot of credit for just deciding that he has had enough and starts to fight back. Chase is just as strong but honestly, he just wants to protect what is his even though he won't acknowledge Terrance as anything. He has his own demons that he is hiding and trying to control. Together these two really make the story flow and the secondary characters just add to the story. You never know which characters you will see in the next book. Find out what will happen between these two, are they meant to be together or will fate have other ideas for them.
I enjoy each and every book in this series by Alice Rachel. I can't wait to see what comes next. Alice loves spending time with her husband and guinea pigs. When she is not writing, she teaches French, reading and drawing. Once again, this author has created a story that you will totally lose yourself in. You will lose track of time and things going on around you. It is a fast story that you will not want to put down until you see the end. This story will keep you engaged until the end and you won't want to miss the end! I highly recommend this story and all the rest of this series. You need to see what happens with all these characters!
Terrence is a short story in the Underground series by Alice Rachel. It is a YA dystopian/ forbidden romance. As with the other books in this series, I really felt for the character and what he had been through. I also appreciate how the story added some more depth to the whole series- by expanding on Terrence and his experiences; we also learn other important facts that helps mesh the whole saga together. Terrence lives in a society that is very regulated, and structured into classes- from elite at the top; to lower class citizens who are forbidden from procreating or marrying. They are deemed so lowly that they are forced into sterilization at 18 years old. There are also laws against being gay, where the government has the right to execute all gay, or suspected gay people. Because of “The Deviance Act” Terrence has had to hide his sexual orientation just to survive. His family aren’t supportive of him at all and even went so far as to blame him for ‘choosing’ to be gay just to complicate their lives.
“I got my first crush on the guy when I was nine years old. And as I grew much older, most dudes started talking about girls and how they enjoyed feeling them up. I had no idea what the big deal was with them drooling over female breasts, but I pretended I was into that too. Yep, sure, I was totally straight. Girls really did it for me.” “My family wasn't super open-minded when it came to that kinda stuff, and I didn't need no trouble with my dad. He'd opened his mouth a few times about the Deviance Act, making it clear he supported a new law ridding our state of all "deviant scum," as he liked to call us gay men. Little did he know his own son was one of them.”
When Terrence is attacked while at a bar, a gorgeous guy comes to his aide. Chase Martinez is a stunning specimen of manhood, he’s also kind and considerate and a member of the underground rebel group. Chase has had a lot to contend with in his life also. They really are perfect together and a great match. Terrence is captivated and falls hard for this charming man. This may be dangerous, but Terrence can’t help feeling the way he does and he is so tired of living his life in fear of what might happen, forced to live a lie.
This is another great story in a really compelling series. There were really heartbreaking moments in the story, but other parts that were uplifting and heart-warming. This is definitely a TRR (tissue required reading). I really like Terrence and was cheering him on right from the beginning. This beautiful story is told from Terrence’s point of view and we really get to see how much of a sweetheart he truly is.
The story is a very quick, easy read with a fast pace and a smooth flow. I can’t wait to see what this talented author does next.
Terrence: A Short Story is book 0.8 in Alice Rachel’s Under Ground series. This isn't a standalone and I would recommend reading the other books in the series to better understand the story. Please be aware that this story also ends in a cliffhanger!
Terrence is bullied because of his sexual orientation and he doesn't get a break from the harassment at home as his father believes Terrence has chosen to be gay. Terrence struggles with everything he has to deal with but things look a little brighter when he finally catches the eye of Gerald who he has admired from afar for several years. Terrence doesn't realise it but his relationship with Gerald will change his life forever and send him down a path that will lead him to Chase Martinez.
Chase Martinez is a member of the Underground; a rebel organisation seeking to overthrow the government. A government who has passed the Deviance Act, which allows all gay people to be executed on sight. This makes it dangerous for Terrence to have a relationship with another man but there's something about Chase that makes Terrence unable to stay away and he's determined to stop denying himself what his body (and heart) wants.
“I was falling in love with him. I couldn't deny my feelings no more, and there was nothing I could do to hold back neither. I didn't even wanna stop. Being with him felt too good.” - Terrence
Having read Standing Ground: Akio (book 2.1 of the Under Ground series), I wanted to learn about Terrence who Akio meets towards the end of his own short story. So much information is packed into this story and I wanted to know more about Terrence’s family, especially his sister who appeared to save him even though she'd never shown Terrence any love. I loved how the story jumped between time and explained what happened between Terrence and Gerald. However, I can't help but feel that's more to what actually happened and hopefully the other books in the series explain as I plan on reading them. Did Gerald do what he'd previously threatened? I also loved reading about the closeness shared between Terrence and Chase who are so clearly falling in love and are perfect for each other, especially Terrence for Chase who deserves to be happy again. The moments when it's just them chatting and cuddling were my favourite.
Alice Rachel has written another great short story that could be the starting block for a full length novel. I fully intend to read this whole series as I'm hoping the other books will answer some of the questions this book has left me with. I also believe my star rating for this short story would go up to 5 if I were to read the books in order and had a better understanding of the series. Alice Rachel is a great author and one I'll definitely be adding to my TBR list!
“You ain’t gonna make it out this time Young.” I have to say I really have enjoyed reading these shorts by Alice Rachel. The Underground series is a dystopian type setting in a future that one can picture not too far off, or out there sadly while they are reading the book. She weaves in the characters and story lines so beautifully that they not only make you laugh and fall in love with them, but also has your heart bleeding all over the floor for them. This particular installment in the series focuses on Terrance and his struggle with his sexuality and the relationships that he tries to have. In a day in age where it is not only frowned upon to be gay it is actually a crime and one that the government is trying to make punishable by death during his formative years. When he is eighteen and trying very hard to be as normal as possible to stay safe from not only the police and bullies in the neighborhood, but from his father and sister, who blame him for his mother’s death and truly despises who he has become as a ‘deviant’. “He’d opened his mouth a few times about the Deviance act, making it clear he supported a new law ridding our state of all ‘deviant scum’, as he liked to call us gay men. Because of that, I had pushed Gerald away when he started showing interest in me a couple of months ago.” This first love we meet is Gerald, a very openly deviant, gay, guy around his age. “I tried to act cool and all, but Gerald was too freaking cute. He was way too hot for my own good. And way too hot for me to stop staring…. Gerald was a magnet that kept pulling me closer when all I wanted was to run far away from him as possible.” In the end the two end up have a relationship that is tumultuous at best but ends sometime before Terrance hits twenty-two. Around this time of his life we meet Chase. The overly hot, mysterious man who happens to fall into Terrance’s life at the exact moment he needed him the most, and the relationship grows from there. Things are not always easy though and there is a secret or two that needs to be handled and a few of Terrance’s past issues need dealt with before they can get to a place to where they can both be in a place to love one another the way they deserve to be loved. “You don’t know what you’re asking for, Querido. I’m gonna end up hurting you really bad… I don’t want you to fall for me.” “Too late for that, love!” Then there is the ending, ugh that cliffhanger ending! That is all I will say about that! This is such a good book! By far one of my top favorites in the whole series. Go grab a few today, as they are fast, short reads, and settle into them. You will not regret it!
Terrence Young has lived all his life with people bullying him and calling him names including his own family all because he likes men and not women. His sister, Ester and his father are mean to him and are always putting him down and they actually believe that he chose to be gay.
Terrence has always tried to hide the fact that he was gay from everyone but when a new law the Deviance Act is passed he has to be more careful than ever before. Under this new law if he is caught kissing, touching or just looking at another guy in the wrong way then he will be executed.
Terrence has to be so careful when he is out in public not to do anything that will get him caught but unfortunately he doesn’t have to do anything they just know. No matter how careful he is it will not stop him from taking a beating. Terrence is getting fed up with having to hide who he is. All Terrence wants is just to be loved.
Terrence’s story is not the first of Alice Rachel’s books I have read. I have read Under Ground book #1 and Standing Ground book #2 and I loved both very much. While I loved Thia and Chi’s story I also fell in love with Chase and Terrence as well and was very glad when I had the opportunity to read Terrence’s story and I can’t wait to read more of everyone’s story in the Under Ground series.
I love the world that has been created for the Under Grounds series and I loved finding out more about Terrence and his background and getting to know him. Terrence is a tough guy to have endured all that he had through his life but he was a soft hearted person too. He cared more for people than they deserved after what they put him through. But that just goes to show how big his heart is. He was not going to stoop to their level and do to them what he didn’t want them doing to him. If he did that would make him just like them.
Come join Terrence and get to know him for who he is and fall in love with him as I did. If you have not read Terrence’s story then I would love to suggest that you give it a try. But let me warn you; a box of tissue may be needed during the reading of Terrence: A Short Story.
This book was quite fascinating. This is a definite must-read for not only every bisexual activist, but to everyone either you're a pansexual, monosexual, homosexual, heterosexual, Genderqueer— heck, everyone! It is for everyone to understand the modern definitions of "Gay" and "Straight". The author begins with the plot where you will sense there's a first-class basis. It's just only tells us of what kind of government we have. They didn't see those people who really needs help. Our political struggles needs to reflect the interest of everyone, address everyone's needs, and endeavor to attain resources for and empower people of groups— not just the ones who fit a certain palatable standard. This book does what it's meant to do. It shows us a nuanced discussion of bisexual issues, and the difficulties faced by those in the Bi community. However, my admiration of this book comes from the ways in which it provided more than what's in the cover. This book means so much to me. Just a fantastic book. Clearly a labor of love. Very persuasive and comforting for any bisexual struggle with her bisexuality. Terrence will show you how to be brave and stick to what you are and what you believe. Chase and Tina are the best example of a good friends and will make you understand that you don't have to be feel outcasted because there's a lot of people out there that will never leave you and will support you no matter what life brings you. This book will make you realize that no matter how much your family is not favor of your decisions and for what you are, they will have no choice but to support you and accept you because they love you. So, if you came here to look into this book, just read it. Trust me. If you stumbled upon this, this is one to seriously consider giving some time to. Someday, I would read the book again just to relish the tale with added flavors. Remember if you feel like being alone and no one was in your side, stand up and head up high. Fight for what you believe is right even there's a Deviance Act that will kill you to death. Being gay doesn't make me any less of a man. ~Terrence Young
Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review and to participate in her readalong. All thoughts and opinions are completely my own.
If you've read any of my previous reviews on the Under Ground series by Alice Rachel, you already know how I've raved about this series and its amazing character development. I know I don't need to say more on that, but it's just so integral to each of her stories and main plotlines as well, and I just love how much depth it adds to the whole series. The love for these characters, as sad as their backstories might be, is so apparent through Alice's writing and the care she puts into getting their (albeit fictional, still important) stories out into this whole of this series.
In addition to character development, this story gives another point of view on the corrupt dystopian that has arisen in this series. This story's namesake is a gay man living in this world where it's illegal to be gay, and can be killed on sight if breaking that law. It's such a terrifying concept that someone could be killed for loving who they love. With June being Pride Month, this readalong has been great for giving readers new perspectives while also relating what we're reading to the real world and all of its current political and social climates.
If you are interested in reading this short story, it can be read separate from the rest of the series, but of course I highly recommend the entire series. Alice Rachel does have a recommended reading order of her books and short stories (found on her website as well as in each book), and it's such a fully satisfying experience to really get to know all of these characters in this complex world she has built in this series.

****4 stars**** Terrence: A short story by Alice Rachel
I give Alice Rachel's short story Terrence 5 stars. The story is part of the Under Ground series of dystopian fiction and follows Terrence Young during the time the Deviance Act is passed, making being gay punishable by death. Terrence tries dating women, tries hiding his feelings and tries to make his dad and sister okay with him since they are convinced he chose to be gay to cause them trouble. Terrence has an ex boyfriend that just won't get over him and move on, which only draws more attention to his lifestyle. He gets bullied and threatened by his peers and insulted by his own family, only to have someone call the Authorities to turn him in for breaking the law by being himself.
In the middle of this he meets Chase Martinez, who easily passes as straight and is known for being a “player”, but something about Terrence has Chase finally acting on his bisexual feelings. Chase is a gorgeous bad boy with a good side and he is also one of the top leaders of The Underground. Terrence and Chase have an undeniable connection and decide that living in fear and fighting who they really are and how they really feel isn't worth the possibility of losing one another and the passion and love they share.
I enjoyed reading more about Terrence, as well as Chase, through reading this story. It is one of my favorites of the Under Ground series. Alice Rachel’s writing is very descriptive and her characters are interesting and unique. I really enjoy the added depth given to them through the short stories in the in the series. Again, I would be happy to have a full length novel, but this story was definitely longer and more fulfilling than I anticipated. This story is a must-read for those who have started reading this series and it doesn't need to be read in a particular order in the series for you to enjoy it.
Terrence is another short story in the Under Ground series by Alice Rachel. Terrence is a character I didnt pay much attention to during the series, so I didnt expect much out of this story. However, I really enjoyed it, and give it a 5 star review. It has a lot of feelings and emotion written into the characters, and you really get a feel for them. I LOVE that Rachel is giving the sales of her short stories to different organizations that address the issues in her story. This is a book about forbidden love, and the feelings surrounding being gay and not accepted. I highly recommend this short story to anyone who read the series, or even part of it. It really makes you stop and think about the children or teens in the situation where they are afraid to be gay, for fear of not being accepted by society, or even their family! Terrence Young knew from an early age that he was not like all the other boys. When they were talking about the cute girls in class, he instead had his eye on another boy. In his community though, being gay doesnt just open you to judgment and ridicule. It can mean death. The Deviance Act made it a crime punishable by death, without trial. Terrence tried to keep his sexuality on the downlow, but people still whispered, and one night he got attacked in a bar because of his. Enter Chase, a knight in shining armor to come rescue Terrence. A very sexy, bisexual knight at that! Chase Martinez has always been somewhat of a ladies man. He is gorgeous, and knows it. He uses his looks and charm, to work his way around the ladies. Despite only being with women, he has had feelings for men in the past, but never acted on them. That is, until he sees Terrence. There is instant attraction, and the rest is history. Read this book to find out where their forbidden romance leads.
Terrence: A Short Story (Under Ground .08): 4 stars Terrance Young is born in a terrible time for being gay man. His country has passed something called the Deviance Act, and if found in the act of being gay, evidence of being gay or even rumors of being gay, you are sent to your death for punishment. He has no support at home and is viewed by his sister and father as a deplorable man and the stain on their already not so perfect life. No matter how hard Terrence tries to hide it, he is automatically labeled as gay because of how he looks and the rumors, although being true, of his past two year relationship with a man. Trying to mind his own business at a bar one night, he is defended by a beautiful brave stranger named Chase. Chase is gorgeous from head to toe and takes zero crap from anyone for who he is or what he likes to do. It turns out that Chase’s life is not so simple as Terrance once thought and that their relationship would be a dangerous but freeing one at that. Can Terrence allow Chase’s strength and determination to pull apart from his toxic family and be the person that he wants to be? Or will he be constricted by the laws of his land and be forced to live by his families horrible expectations?
Terrence’s story is a terrifying example of what could happen in our world if the wrong laws pass or if hatred would win. Both the characters of Terrence and Chase are beautifully written and it is so amazing to see a healthy relationship and the power behind it. It is impossible not to fight for them throughout the storyline and also feel the emotional roller coaster of heartbreak and sadness. Can we talk about the ending though?! How can we leave it like that! Alice Rachel has done it again, and of course I need more!
Terrence is a short by Alice Rachel that goes along with The Underground series of novels and short stories. The main character is a gay man living in the remnants of New York after an uprising and the installment of a fascist government. Under this government, social classes are separated, low class people cannot marry, and anyone who is gay or even accused of being gay is executed. Terrence lives in constant fear of someone discovering that he is homosexual. Things are made worse by the fact that his ex-boyfriend has been stalking him and in a society where one wrong look in public can literally mean life or death, this can only spell disaster. A chance meeting in a bar may be the exact thing Terrence needs to free himself from his hateful family and his own self-loathing. When Terrence is attacked by three men who have only rumors to back up their belief in his “deviancy”, Chase Martinez steps in to give the aggressors a small taste of their own medicine. Chase, being a picture perfect example of male sex appeal, could be the comfort Terrence needs or his downfall. This short story was a lovely look into a characters background that I wish more writers would give their readers. Just with this little bit of the story makes me want to get all the other shorts and the first book of the Underground. My only complaint is the characters use of double negatives but I also think it is purposeful to show what kind of upbringing he has had. It’s like a mix of 1984 and just a dash of Handmaid’s Tale.
Terrence: A Short Story (UNDER GROUND #0.8) by Alice Rachel 5 out of 5 stars
Ms. Rachel’s has not disappointed me with her short stories in the Under Ground Series and I think I’ve read all of the Under Ground books. I simply love her work. She has this unique way of telling her story that has you stepping into her world and the characters are well developed. Terrence Young isn’t new to bullying. The teasing and harassment are a constant. His family is less than understanding as well. To them, Terrence chose to be gay and complicate their lives. Their little rejections sting and cut him deeply. Terrence's life takes a turn for the worse overnight when the Deviance Act is passed. Under the new law, a mere look, a simple touch, or a small kiss in public could mean death. Terrence attempts to hide his orientation to survive. That is until a gang attacks him in a bar and Chase Martinez interferes.
Terrence is attracted to Chase he is gorgeous, kind-hearted, and he's a rebel in the Underground all qualities that Terrence can’t stop from falling in love. Loving Chase might be dangerous, but Terrence is done living in fear and letting others dictate what is right for him.
I highly recommend this story/series and you need to read them in-order to get the full effect of the series and get to know all the characters… I just simply love these characters and story line. I can’t get enough of this series…. By Tracy Manderson
I give Terrence: A Short Story (UNDER GROUND #0.8) by Alice Rachel 5 stars.
Terrance Young has been bullied all his life. The people on his side of town give him angry stares in the least. Then there are the ones who beat him up just for being gay. The cops are of no help, they will only make matters worse. All of these people do not understand that it’s not just a choice. He has always been interested in boys. Even his own family hates him. He longs for someone to love him for being himself.
When the Deviance Act is passed, he knows he is in extreme danger. Being gay can bring terrible consequences if he is found out. After a close call, he is now completely on his own. Then he runs into someone who just may turn out to be the man of his dreams.
This is another wonderful short story in this series. While I have not read any of the novels yet, I have read a few of the short stories and I have loved every one of them. They show raw, pure love. This is not the typical boy meets girl love story that has been typical for so many decades, and that makes it all the better. It shows the difficulty living in a world where your sexual preference is banned, and what happens when you live in extreme poverty. It is written with such emotion, you will feel for Terrence, no matter what your orientation is in real life. I was having a rough night when I was reading this, and the pure love felt in this story was heartwarming to me. I highly recommend this story.
