What a ride! This book has accompanied me for several years now; it has become a fixture of my language-learning endeavours. The authors definitely don't take any prisoners. You start with simple aphorisms and end with Homer; and in between you do not even realize that you pass through original texts. One must be a learner endowed with utmost perseverance to make it through the end, but the feeling of writing down the final line about the Lotophagoi is one of supreme joy! It is worth the journey!
I'm using the older edition. According to Amazon, this edition - at £34 quid - now has no index, no answers to exercises and no section 25 on Homeric Greek. You can see these vital sections online. Of course, if you aren't online (like my mum) the book has just been rendered useless! However, it's a bit bigger (it only just fits into my bag now). Whoop de do! Buy the older edition if these things matter to you. My 1990s edition cost £7.99, which is an interesting commentary on the vast (+400%) price increases at TY Books, in my view unjustifiable! Is it because students are a nice little money earner these days?
