DEAD TEXAS ROADS is the 2nd book in the Torn Apart series and resumes the journey of several Texans face off against the living and the dead on the back roads of the state! Liz Jameson with the two Vietnam vets, Harry Walters and John Tilman continue searching the back roads of Texas for Liz's children. Amid the mayhem of the human casualties of the viral agent, there are small pockets of humanity that are still willing to help with the quest. Matt Monroe and his cohorts struggle to supply the Kerrville camp where they harbor women and children lost in the apocalypse. On a supply run, they rescue a foul-mouthed, gun-toting, woman truck driver that turns into an ally and supporter. Steve Benton, Della Marshall, and their small group take shelter in a cloistered haven only to discover it was smoke and mirrors. They continue their quest for sanctuary. MP Brian Jameson escaped a military base overrun by the infected. Without the demands of his military obligation, he has one directive; get to his wife and daughters. His struggle to reunite with his family is long and arduous.
This was another rip-roaring adventure as multiple groups of survivors try and survive in a world gone to hell, but there are problems and not only those of the characters. This was a cleaner copy than the first one. I only came across thirty-two unique issues, that with a good editor, could be cleaned up: punctuation, missing words, wrong words and formatting.
Another issue is the addition of new characters. Why would that be a problem/ I mean a series with six books will have more characters added as it should be. The problem is, they are joining the story too fast and their scenes are resembling a machinegun; they are spraying all over the place.
Chapters become short passed the fifty-percent mark and every one is filled with some type of action scene. Some are believable while others fell flat. I mean how many times can one read about the undead being killed in gruesome ways yet still keep the readers attention? The formula is becoming too contrite and trivial. It’s starting to remind me of “Game of Thrones,” of which I was not a fan of. And, you will now need a scores card to keep off with the four main groups and all the splinter groups that are being thrown into the fray.
Overall, it’s not a bad read, but at this time, I will not be continuing with the series.
I'm really enjoying this series. Yes, the editing could be better, but I don't usually notice things like that too much unless it causes confusion.
The one thing, I did notice between the two books is that the author's prejudice against fat/large people is evident throughout the story. Every time size is mentioned, that person is stupid and or evil. Race, special needs, even age is handled very delicately, but not weight.
Love this author and have read several o her book but this one takes the cake- misspelling and grammatical errors in every single chapter! Detracts from fabulous storytelling an the publisher should be ashamed at the end product he produced.
I enjoyed reading what our groups of survivors were getting up to. Very good storytelling and really enjoy the characters. There were more spelling errors and some sentence errors but didn't distract too much.
The author is beginning to really struggle with editing and remembering her characters' names and story arcs. Editing on book #1 wasn't good. Editing on this one is worse.
A brilliant book and I’m getting to know the characters which are many but easy to differentiate between the groups that they are part of. It’s an intense read with no time for thoughts only hope that they are all able to survive and come together at last. Totally recommend reading this series.
Excellent story. Lots of action and terror. The characters are well done and realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I hope the next one is coming out soon.
The survivors of the apocalypse in Texas are trying to find loved ones, family and a place of safety. Another nonstop ride. I'm ready for the next book 😱
Ugh...still a good story but can the author edit first? The amount of typos distracts from how good this series could be. I wouldn't read anymore if they weren't free through KU.
I love zombie books, movies, series, all of them. When I started reading the first book in this series, I thought, uh huh gonna be good. And it truly was .I love the characters...Tate who drives an 18 wheeler (she's tuff), Liz , while trying to save her 2 babies, has lost herself. Matt, the alcoholic soldier who wants to save everybody, Steve with artificial legs who is strong on his own. In this second book of the series, we refind these old friends and make new ones. Liz's father who has a mountain retreat. Liz's husband, Brian who unbeknownst to Liz is alive and desperately trying to reach the mountain. Tate, who has lost her big wheeler and almost lost her life. Of course there are plenty of bad guys. And way too many zombies! There are several different storylines going on. It's going to be fun to see how the author gets everybody together. It will be hard to wait on the next book. Soon I hope? Oh, and Liz has a secret...😄
