As Lord Byron, who no doubt survived many an awkward situation himself, said, “Always laugh whenever you can. It is cheap medicine."
In the Glow of the Lavalamp delivers ten stories of sex gone hilariously wrong, set in the bathtubs, back seats, battlegrounds, and bedrooms of America. These tales confirm that bizarre is indeed the nature of the universe and humor may be the best path through it.
A grad student rappels down the side of a building on a bed sheet in an attempt to escape shame. An unlikely couple destroys a family heirloom when desire careens out of control. A bumbling lothario nearly beheads his lover when his seduction plans go awry. A middle-aged woman finds herself entwined in a passionate embrace at a Civil War battlefield. Earnest people, hell-bent on believing that reality lies at the surface of things, scramble toward acceptance of their humanity as they stumble over the unspoken and unacknowledged.
You'll laugh, grimace, maybe even shriek with recognition. Odd as it may seem, tales of bad sex and other misfortunes can restore your faith in humankind, in your ability to weather the chaos of life, and in the healing power of laughter. Light and redemption glitter among the catastrophes within these pages.
Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In the years since starting this blog, I've become a fan of short stories. I have read my good share of horror short stories, and I was curious about this book with short stories about bad sex and other misfortunes! Some of the stories in this book were so funny and made me laugh. Others made me feel bad for the characters in the story. Overall, I had a good time reading this book and I'm glad the author shared it with me.
A book full of stories about bad sex and other misfortunes. Some of the stories were very enjoyable to read and others not so much, which is always the case when you pick up a bundle with short stories. I do recommend this book for people who are interested, since you can just read it in one afternoon or evening.
This is one of those books that, based solely on the title, I would pick up off the shelves without hesitation.
I would not have regretted it.
It was a collection of other peoples’ tales of embarrassing, bad, and hilarious sex. The author prefaces the novel by explaining that it’s a universal constant, and if you think you’re not included, well, that’s probably why your calls aren’t getting returned.
There’s plenty of humor to downplay the uncomfortable feelings usually associated with talking about sex. There were tales that turned traditional norms—both the acts and the kinds of people involved—on their heads.
They weren’t all about sex, either. Some were just plain humiliating stories that would let the reader know someone was having a worse day, or just provide a laugh that someone somewhere, desperately needed.
You know how in romances the couple always has perfect sex like they were made for each other? Well, this is what happens off the page when things go bump and not in a good way!
I found this book rip-roaring hilarious - it's hard to believe these were based on real stories. In some, I laughed my guts out. Others, I cringed in sympathy. Either way, it's definitely worth buying if you enjoy reading about when things go wrong... sometimes terribly wrong!
I expected this book to be a compilation of funny sex stories that went wrong. First couple of stories proved to be that and I enjoyed them. Then it started to go all over the place. A couple of the stories were bashing Republicans, a few more involved bowel movements either on someone, themselves or in a bag and thrown in a tree. It just got sadder and sadder by the time you got to the end. I would have really enjoyed the book if all the stories were as funny as the first couple.
This book was thoroughly entertaining and has a story in it for just about anyone, there is definitely a variety of bad sex described in this book. It was a relatively quick read, and had me entertained from start to finish, there were many different stories on how bad it can really be and sometimes you just have to laugh it off.
This book was absolutely hysterical! It's a fast read too. There are some funny incidents besides just bad sex stories. There's a few bathroom gone wrong stories too. There's even a few political jokes thrown in for good measure!
Honestly, I don't want to give anything away but if you enjoy funny stories about things going wrong in the bedroom, this is the book for you.
Very good book of collection of short stories. I laughed, I bit my nails, I reflected on my own experiences. It was mostly hilarious except when the author put you into the real-life stuff that was actually minor, but from our own similar experiences were not minor to most of us. Good job, Lily Wilson. Good book.
