What's most helpful about this book is Schaller's great skill is describing many of the dynamics in middle-sized churches. This book is 40 years old now, so some of these are different now. What's perhaps changed the most is that there aren't many middle-sized churches anymore. Some certainly changed their ways as he suggested and are now large churches. Many more have shrunk.
Maybe viewing the "middle-sized" as a waypoint en route to another "Destination"/size is one reason things have changed. Unfortunately, many American churchgoers now cannot even fathom a church that isn't large.
From a leadership perspective, there is much to be gleaned, but all the insights must be subjected to biblical and theological scrutiny.
