Lead in the Environment: A Health Hazard

Lead is one of 92 elements in nature. It is usually found in combination with other elements to form different minerals. There are many sources of lead in our environment, an individual can get lead poisoning from a variety of sources including lead in paint, gasoline, water systems, and food. Many children are exposed to some lead from air, dust, and soil. Some children are exposed to high dose sources of lead, usually lead-based paint is the most widespread and dangerous high-dose source of lead exposure for preschool children. Lead is so toxic that the amount of lead dust that covers a fingernail is enough to send a child into a coma or into convulsions leading to death. It takes less than a tenth of that amount to cause IQ loss, hearing loss, or behavioral problems like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia.
