In light of my Sta. Ana stained glass obsession, I started digging around the architecture library and found this. It's a lovely introduction to contemporary secular stained glass, from a briefer on its types and methods of production to the features of notable artists and a practical guide to sourcing stained glass. I enjoyed this and found many of the works interesting (noted below). It is, however, very limited to the West.

Quotes and Notes:

John Piper’s Baptistry window: modernist brick/glass breezeblock thing
Modernist’s involvement in stained glass: De Stijl, Bauhaus
Marc Chagall, Staff memorial to Dag Hammarskjold - gorgeous blue
Jacques Loire, window, main staircase, Chartres Town Hall
Priest’s Seminary by Ludwig Schaffrath - like wave off kanagawa
Tribute to Mark Rothko by Johannes Schreiter
Ludwig Schaffrath’s Aachen bank
Jochem Poensgen Police Academy- beautiful crisp lines
Black and white plus colour technique: “Opting for a single colour with black tends to give a work “decorative” rather than “artistic” qualities, so that the design is integrated more successfully into its architectural context. In stained glass, restraint is frequently the key to excellence.”
Lutz Haufschild, Burnaby Jamatkhana depressed window/cool bay window thing
Deborah Coombs Hospital project
on Joachim Klos church: “The composition as a whole has a structured primitivism that bursts into song at key points.”
Joachim Klos rainbow window walbeck church
David Pearl, the grand theatre, simple design to highlight it at night
Eve and the Apple by Albinas Elskus
pg. 52 vagaries of daylight
Klaus gemündt’s floran danzinger glass panels
Narcissus Quagliata optical illusion roundel
David Pearl, Great Missenden Abbey: gorgeous insertions of modern stained hlass into cathedral windows
Ryoichi Mitsuya, hall of private residence: gorgeous overlaid stained glass ptterns
Ed Carpenter:
- tries to make his windows look as if they are “hatched from the same egg as the building”
- He is especially fascinated by the process of working with architects to evolve suitable sites for stained glass - “where the building pauses to ask for detail.”
- Classical poise the prevalent mood
- Kaiser Permanente Medical Centerf
- Justice Center, portland orego
- Dichroic glass (changes color) from the skylight, oregon institute of technology
