Chapter one is about the land, weather, and animals. I enjoyed the photographs included in this section. However, chapter two starts with a full-page photo of a monument to "the confederate defenders of Charleston" which I could have done without. Hoffman writes in chapter two, "Many of the tribes were forced to move out of South Carolina by settlers who demanded the American Indians' land. Other tribes became completely extinct due to their inability to fight off some of the diseases, such as smallpox, the new settlers brought with them from Europe." This chapter grossly understates how horribly the natives were treated by colonists and then Hoffman writes things such as, "The American Indians attacked the settlers, killing four hundred people and starting a two-year war." Are you kidding me, Hoffman? Several references are made in chapter two to "slaves" and "blacks" too.
