Catalogue of an exhibition of the work of the artist and illustrator Arthur Rackham held at the Dulwich Picture Gallery from 18 December 2002 to 2 March 2003.
Probably my favourite book illustrator, Arthur Rackham fills my mind and my memory with his illustrations for Wind in the Willows, Alice in Wonderland and many children's books. His gnarled and tangled trees and their gnarled and tangled creatures emerging from them; his witches and elves and fairies and his characters from the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen; all stimulated the imagination of a child in - or under - the bedclothes. This publication accompanied the exhibition of his work at Dulwich Picture Gallery. It widens one's knowledge of his work, particularly his landscapes, his use of oils as well as watercolours and his skill with pencil, pen and ink and silhouettes. The book begins with a lengthy text about Rackham, his influences and his connections with authors, artists and publishers. The remainder is an extensive and annotated reproduction of his work. A delightful education and aide memoire.
