The research by Philip P. Mason was brilliant, and everything was well documented. The mine stories are very interesting. I'm giving the book 4 stars just because of all the research and time he put into it. It doesn't seem fair to mark it lower just because Henry Hobert was a pious jerk.
Henry Hobart was, to me, very unlikeable. But he thought he was great. I found him extremely judgemental of most everyone. He would state ridiculous stories as fact. He was very opinionated and righteous. He would state how he disliked a man with certain qualities and then go on to talk about himself, not even realizing he was describing exactly what he didn't like about the other person.
