Originally trained as a humanist lawyer around 1530, he went on to serve as a principal figure in the Reformation. He developed the system later called Calvinism.
After tensions provoked a violent uprising, Calvin fled to Basel and published the first edition of his seminal work. In that year of 1536, William Farel invited Calvin to help reform in Geneva. The city council resisted the implementation of ideas of Calvin and Farel and expelled both men. At the invitation of Martin Bucer, Calvin proceeded to Strasbourg as the minister of refugees. He continued to support the reform movement in Geneva, and people eventually invited him back to lead. Following return, he introduced new forms of government and liturgy. Following an influx of supportive refugees, new elections to the city council forced out opponents of Calvin. Calvin spent his final years, promoting the Reformation in Geneva and throughout Europe.
Calvin tirelessly wrote polemics and apologia. He also exchanged cordial and supportive letters with many reformers, including Philipp Melanchthon and Heinrich Bullinger. In addition, he wrote commentaries on most books of the Bible as well as treatises and confessional documents and regularly gave sermons throughout the week in Geneva. The Augustinian tradition influenced and led Calvin to expound the doctrine of predestination and the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation.
Calvin's writing and preaching provided the seeds for the branch of Protestantism that bears his name. His views live on chiefly in Presbyterian and Reformed denominations, which have spread throughout the world. Calvin's thought exerted considerable influence over major figures and entire movements, such as Puritanism, and some scholars argue that his ideas contributed to the rise of capitalism, individualism, and representative democracy in the west.

As Institutas de Calvino mudaram o mundo. Essa obra teve amplo impacto sobre as diversas esferas sociais, desde a religião à política. As Institutas são incontornáveis para uma adequada compreensão do mundo moderno.
O autor faz uma ampla sistematização do ensino bíblico a partir de uma interpretação reformada e dialoga tanto com a tradição humanística clássica, quanto com a tradição da patrística e do catolicismo romano. Por isso, a escrita do autor é propositiva (dogmática) e apologética (defensiva). Durante todo o texto, Calvino busca defender a razoabilidade de sua interpretação frente a outras leituras. Penso que sua melhor classificação é de uma obra de Apologética Teológica. Para Calvino, não basta sistematizar os dogmas, é preciso defendê-los com uma interpretação condizente com o ensino bíblico revelado e com a realidade criada.
No prefácio, em carta ao Monarca Francisco, Calvino dá o tom da obra: a verdade bíblica apregoada pela Reforma deve ser defendida. No primeiro livro que compõe esse Tomo, o autor discorre amplamente sobre o conhecimento de Deus, de nós mesmos e de sua criação. Nos últimos capítulos desse livro, discorre sobre a providência de Deus por meio de seus decretos, e de sua soberania que preserva a responsabilidade humana. Aliás, Calvino como Agostinho afirma essas duas verdades bíblicas: Deus é soberano e nós somos responsáveis, mas ele não busca solucionar todas as perguntas dessa relação. No segundo livro, Calvino trata do conhecimento redentor em Cristo. Ele trata da Queda, da submissão da vontade e da razão ao pecado, da Lei, comenta os dez mandamentos, da redenção, do Evangelho, das naturezas e ofícios de Cristo. A tradução e diagramação da UNESP são excelentes.

Humm, meus pensamentos?
Hum, penso duas coisas: A tradução é excelente e/ou Calvino escrevia muito bem.
A leitura tem sido muito proveitosa e creio que edificante na minha formação teológica. Agora entendo porque Calvino é tão importante para Reforma, ele conseguiu lidar muito bem com temas que são dilemas até hoje para o cristianismo.

Esse é um daqueles livros clássico dos clássicos. Sem dúvidas vale a pena a leitura. Essa versão da Unesp é uma tradução de fácil compreensão, gostei bastante. Calvino vai tratar de assuntos importantes e basilares à fé cristã. Leia com calma e de preferência com um bloco de anotações do lado.

Excelente obra, fundamental para todo cristão e principalmente para os cristãos reformados. Essa edição da unesp tem uma linguagem super tranquila para ler. Recomendo a todos.
